Had a crash with the EXI 450 yesterday. Coming out of a too-low-for-me inverted hover I didn't give enough positive collective to miss the ground. Damage:

Feathering shaft
Main shaft
1 blade
Main gear
Bent frame
1 stripped servo (elevator)
Bent tail boom
Canopy split in a few places
Very minor bend in the flybar
Bruised ego

Fortunately, I had just enough spares (and Scotch tape) to fix everything. I bent the flybar and frame back and I happened to have one 2 year old Align 325 blade left over.

Strangely, it seems to fly even better than before.

Even though it ended up being an extremely hard upright crash-landing, the skids survived with only scuffs. These skids are the same SuperSkids I had on my very first heli, an HBFP. I moved them to the King a year later, and now they're on the EXI. They must have been through 20 crashes or more, including the ones that killed the FP and the King.A soul in tension is learning to fly

Shiz, you using the align parts for spares or EXI?
I have been using EXI's cause they were cheaper. I still am working on spare parts I got in bulk over last winter when they had sales and such going on.

Today I worked on my 2 EXI 450's I have been trying to solve a vibe issue on one of them and thought it was the flybar. But it's not. For some reason, it works well on one heli but not the other. Head swapping today showed it's the heli and not the head. I think maybe it's the headspeed. Heads were not 100% identical on the linkages so when I swapped, the trouble heli was running a lower headspeed at hover cause the pitch was biased about 2 degrees. I evened things out and I'm just gonna lower the headspeed a tad on that heli and just fly it. Maybe I'll look at my main bearing blocks or main bearings after the next crash.

I test flew the EXI 250 last night but my pinion is too big. No one seems to have smaller .4M pinions so I think I'll just get an Align 250 motor cause the Kv is lower. I was using an $11 Mystery motor someone recommended but you gotta loctite the pinion on and I hate that. I saw another person's Align 250 yesterday and we were comparing notes. I think the Gaui 200 probably builds better than the Align or EXI but the Gaui 200 is not cheap like the EXI 250 is.

My HBK2 w/ metal head is a tad bigger than the 250 is but may just be a better backyard flyer anyway.

I still had a few odds and ends left over from when I had a TREX a year ago.

I'll probably order some more spares this week or next. Mostly Align.

I like Align main shafts. Both Jesus bolt holes are a little smaller than the ones on the EXI stuff. I get a lot of rotational slop with the EXI shafts. Feathering shafts - EXI is fine.

I am finally out of main gears. I hear the EXIs are notoriously soft, so I'll probably go with Align there too. Align tail booms are a smidge bigger than the EXI. Better grip in the block and tailcase.A soul in tension is learning to fly

I think the Gaui 200 probably builds better than the Align

I don't like Gaui builds.

The links are rubbery and too thin. They don't have a defined "click on"

No guide for the tail control rod that runs along the boom.

My swash separated.

The tail pitch control is of a design that it tends to go "inside out" in a crash.

The canopy tends to crack.

They have stems you secure the canopy without a "pop on head". instead it's the head of a bolt that tears up your canopy grommet.

They don't fly as well as the TREX250.

I have been preping for doing inverted hover. i checked my pitch today and i am at 7 both ways. all i need to do now is get a diffrent gyro and maybe better servos. but i might try it once i just get a gyro. And yes i will get videos for you people that want video.

Moved links one hole out on servo arms to get more response. Changed tail motor after it gave up in flight, resulted in gluing again AR. Leveled swash. Heli fyes better now - more responsive. It is even more fun to fly it around obstacles - requires way more precise control. As you guess it is all about 4#3.

4G6 is sold everywhere. Looks like it is quite popuar. USA guys - buy from USA please. Leave HK and Chineese shops alone. I still cannot buy from US, but you can, so you have an option, but I don't.

MMike, good counter opinion. So we can say that small helis suck?

Hahaha, just kidding. I've yet to really fly the EXI 250. The small screws and linkages are something I have to get used to dealing with.

I had to buy a titatium .9mm hex handle driver for working on the TREX250. I also have a "lamp style magnifier" just to see what I'm doing.

The TREX 250 had the same gyro as the EP100.

I borrowed it at the build.

The servos are better in the TEX250.

However, that aside, the TREX250 has a heavier more stable quality IMHO.

Rebuilt the EXI 450 that crashed yesterday.
Mainshaft,spindle,boom, 1 skid.

Test flew today at lunch.

Test flew another EXI that was having vibe problems. It's not the head cause the head came out of the other 450 (above) last week that was flying smooth. The other recent change was the motor. I pulled that motor and put the Align 430L into it which is KG (known good).
But on takeoff, the pinion was slipping. Pulled it out. I had not filed a flat on the shaft and the grub screw inside was stripped.

Then I flew the flybarless 450 again. It does gets into this state of instability at times and I think it needs tweeking that I just don't know how to do in the PC program.j

Edit: Went back after work and borrowed a file from my job. Filed a flat on the shaft and flew it. Seems like the vibes are gone. Align 430L 3000RPM w/ an 11T and flat 100% throttle curve. 2700 at end of flight.

Redid the head setup on the EXI from the servos up. This time I wanted to see if I noticed a difference so I turned swash expo to "INH" before the setup.

I started with the link lengths from the TREX 450SEV2 manual.

I only had to turn both short blade pitch links 3 full turns and one long pitch link one turn and put swash settings to -70, 70, 70 to get +10°, 0°, -10° on pitch and +6°, -6° on cyclic pitch. Near-perfect tracking.

The flight differences were a slightly smaller tendency to drift, and more noticeable difference between 20% and 10% cyclic expo.A soul in tension is learning to fly

Replaced EXI 500 maingear that I stripped dumbthumbing the idle up switch this morning.

Reconfigured the linkages to bring better symetry to the gaui flybarless head on the 450.

Pulled the Detrum GY48V out of the 450 and put the 401 back in.
Worked more on the EXI 250 and put a faster tail servo in and a different gyro ($20 Colco GY400) and it was holding much better now.

Unfortunatly, I robbed my HBK2 of it's tail servo and gyro in the process. If it works out, then I'll just order another tail servo and get the HBK2 flyable again.

Flew some flights yesterday and today w/ the HBK2 after getting it back into flyable condition.
Tried a chinese weight mod on the HBK2. It helped me to increase my gain about 10% but nothing wonderous.
I still have a cheap junk $20 gyro on it so I can't expect much.
Every time I debate in my head to put a better motor and gyro on it and such, I change my mind.
It's still has a cheap brushless motor ESC on it that is not that powerful so I guess I'll keep it as a park/backyard flyer for simple upright flight at least for now. It's very stable to I'll just leave it at that.

Lots of work today. Rain all day.

Repaired EXI 450 from crashe due to Rx/Tx failure/glitch????
Installed Hobbywing BEC
Flybar,boom,mainshaft,spindle,blades,tailshaft.
I used heatgun to loosen loctite on the tail hub grubscrew and melted some tail arm stuff :P I had spare parts from a plastic tail and used that.

I did some electronics install onto a new CF EXI 450 that I'm building for a flying buddy. My first time using a DX6i.

I also copied 5 models over (manually, feature by feature) into my new DX7 from my old DX7 (very tedious).
