Delta V charging NiMH
I have just read up a bit on delta v charging for nimh packs, and i have a question. my charger has delta v capability, but i can also program the amount of voltage drop that it shuts off at (2mV, 3mV, 5mV, ect) what is a good value to set this to?

Also, is charging like this on a regular basis at 1C going to hurt my pack?

8-10mV for NiCs
3-5mv for NiMhs

no...1C is standard

1/10 (one tenth) of C is for break in.

2C is for quick charge (but shorter life span)

ok, so im pretty sure i have toasted my pack already then. i wasnt using delta v and charging at 1C pretty early. 2 questions:

How long for break in?

and how much shorter lifespan charging at 2C with delta v?

(thanks for the mV numbers by the way. i have looked everywhere for them and noone was showing any.)

divide total capacity by 10 = hours of charging at 1/10tenth

I dont believe there is a formula for such.

FWIW the average life cycle for NiCs is roughly 1000 cycles...depending on care and use.

Rule of thumb is to replace when it can not hold 70% of its capacity.

NiCs have a self discharge rate of 15% per month if I recall correctly. If higher, you may have a cell going bad.

NiCs should be discharged first prior to recharging to avoid the "memory" effect.

for a nimh pack, how many times would you charge it at 1/10C to break it in? ir is it just for the first charge?

I have not come across any magic number.

It is done until the batt can perform at its rated capacity. So if it takes its full intented amount, you have reached that magic number.

Same holds true for batts that have been sitting unused for a while.

Some smart chargers out there have this "cycling" feature that will do it automatically for you such as charging, discharging or vice versa up to 10 times (Triton chargers is one)

my hyperion charger will cycle up to 5 times. it kept on taking different amounts but nowhere near the rated amount. i did set the charge to 2 amps and discharge to 1 amp for a 2500 mAh pack though. like i said, i think i toasted it.

thank you for all your help!

One final note...discharge to 0.9V per cell or 1.1V is testing for Tx,Rx usefull flight time.

I would discharge at this stage and try 1/10tenth again as a final try prior to discarding/replacing.
