OS91 cline viper starter
I have a new OS91 with cline mod and viperhead...damm it's hard to start.

I have a Robbe 12v heavy duty starter powered by a 12v 7a lead acid battery and it's struggling to turn the engine over. I managed eventually to start the engine by losening one of the glow plugs which is less than ideal.

Can run 14v or maybe higher through the Robbe HD starter?

Or do I basically need to update my starting equipment?

I've been using 19.2 volts on a 12Volt Hobbico starter for three years now. So far so good.

Yes you need a new system, at least a new battery/s.

I'm using the same starter on my 91SZH with OMI carb and Cline regulator in my Trex 700 although powered by a 3700mAh 4S lipo pack, starts every time and only needs charging every couple of weeks or so. A 7Ah SLA battery isn't going to provide the current needed to start a 90 anyway, starter stalls, current rises, voltage drops and no go.Steve -Trex 700N, Trex 600N, Raptor 550E, 450SE, Mini Titan, Logo 5003D, Beam E4

The group of us flying out here in Newport News VA are running Dynatron starters on 20-24 volts (dual 8 cell Sub C in series or dual 10 cell Sub C in series). The OS 90 is a beast to get started first time out!Jim Senicka

Those old 7AH gel cells are hideous.
The very least you need for a .91 is a lawn or big motorcycle battery or a couple of 6 cell nicad packs wired in series for 14 volts.

I use two 7 cell nicad packs on my Robbe Super starter and there is no 91 that can best it when the packs are hot.

Yeah voltage is your friend.
I picked up 2 8-cell 3300 packs on ebay cheap.

FYI

Just upgraded my battery setup to 2x 7cell 4500mAh NiMH (still using the Robbe HD 12v starter) and it turns the motor over no problems all.

Voltage is key
