Almost Disaster:
The short version. I was at the local flying field this weekend. One guy was flying his pusher-prop nitro jet plane when the "Futaba" radio he was using had a malfunction. The right gimble appeared to have broken inside the radio. At this point there was no control. He yelled "look out" but, with the speed of the plane it was almost instant that it crashed behind the pit area where a family was standing. The plane hit the pinic table striking the father standing next to his wife who was holding an infant. When the plane struck the table it hit the father cutting his arm, leg, and foot. The baby screamed like you can't imagine. As soon as the plane hit, the father instantly pulled his family away from the crash. I went down to help. As I, and a couple of other people were patching up the injuries the father sustained, the mother and father were checking the baby for injuries. The baby was still screaming. The baby had what appeared to be two "pinch hole" cuts on the front left shoulder. I would assume it was from debris that hit her. The guy flying the plane couldn't apoligize enough, and was in a panic almost crying. After the father was patched up to stop the blood coming from his injuries he drove himself to the hospital in one car, and his wife drove the baby to be checked out also. I haven't heard anything more about the accident. The police were called to file a report. The radio was confisicated by the police for "chain of custody" reasons, and pictures of the plane were also taken. I don't know the model of the Futaba radio. One guy at the field said he just bought one, and is going to get rid of it. If anything else the word is now out.

Keep us posted if you hear anything more. Very curious about the model# and history of the radio. Never heard of anything like this so hopefully its an isolated incident. Where at in the US are you located?

No I'm not blaming Futaba. It wasn't a lock out. It appears the gimble broke inside the radio. After the incident you can feel the elevator/aileron gimble not moving correctly. The pilot all of a sudden had no elevator or alieron. And if you tipped the radio over you can hear what appeared to be a broken part shaking around the inside of the case. The radio was not taken apart by anyone for obvious reasons. I'm just relating what happened.

I wonder if it was an older radio?
Maybe had been dropped sometime in its life? Hard to belive a gimbal just breaking??
Please let us know as you find the facts out...

That is very unusual for something like that to happen. I bet it was dropped sometime before or something heavy sat on the gimbal and it failed at the wrong time.....Ron

airboss thanks for the information. I would have never though of that. I'm going to try to contact the guy that was flying the plane today. We can't open the radio because the police conficated it. I don't know if the radio is going to be looked at, or sent back to Futaba. I'll let everyone know. We have a bunch of good people who fly at this field, and everyone wants to figure out what happened. If I can get hold of him I'll get eyeryone the information, and also pass on what airboss stated.

People where hurt, I would call that a Disaster. I sincerely hope everyone involved will be all right. This incident is a reminder that safety should be in the forefront of every one's mind and unnecessary persons should be keep back away from the pit area.

Accident are going to happen, equipment fails from time to time as we all know, getting rid of a radio because of one incident seem like an over reaction but I do under stand his concern.

Thanks go to captor03 for bring this to our attention.
If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

I made a mistake in my post. The family was standing behind the pit area where the spectators stand. I edited the post, sorry.
