I picked up 2 books the other where my other half works (in a Bookshop) and they were typical O Level Maths and the 11+ questions from the early 70's.

I showed them to someone who (in the past few years) received an A* grading on his GCSE Maths. The look on his face was a picture !!

He said "What the hell is this? I don't understand the question let alone know what the answer is !" I then explained to him what it meant and said that he couldn't use a calculator as they were not available when that exam paper came out. He would have to use either a slide rule or Log Tables. Again a look of non-understanding !!

I just smiled.
