Lepton: worth keeping, or better to nix and get a Trex 500?
I've had a year of fun with my Lepton and Kora 15-12 motor with 20c FP 3700 4s setup. However, after flying a friend's stock Trex 500 that was ballistic, I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of the Lepton and going for a 500. After all, I have a 600e and 700 and love them both (especially the 700!)... so why not stick with Align?

My 4s setup is no longer working for me. So, the decision is this:
- Get a 25c TP v2 Xtreme 3850 5s and 19t pinion and stay with the Lepton.
- Sell it and go with 25c FP 2500 6s and a stock Trex 500.

One thing that's always frustrated me with the Lepton is that it has terrible interaction, which I can't seem to get rid of. Also, the tail drifts and I can't get that to clean up, either. I'm running Airtronics 94761's on cyclic, Spectrum 760 w/ 9257 on tail, Kora 15-12 w/ 24t pinion, Jazz 55, Medusa 6v 3a BEC, extended carbon tail blades, carbon lift kit, and MAH 425 blades.

The 500, on the other hand, flies like most Trex's -- on rails.

Thoughts?

Well, i'm surprised. I got a Lepton and a Vibe 500E and both of them are flying a lot better than any T-500 i tried. You can't compare a Lepton to a T-500. It's far better made and a lot lighter. I'm also using Kora 15-12 and Jazz 55-6-18 but with 5S 3300 bat and 18T. The Mah blades never gave me a good result! I'm now using SAB blades and it's a lot better... Very precise flights. On tail i use JR Voyager E white tail blades. Drilled at 3mm and with a brass insert of 3*2.2mm.

I won't push you to change your Lepton for a t-500. Very bad idea indeed!

The Lepton is only ~200 grams lighter than the TRex

My Lepton does roll and climb quicker than a T500
Loose your MAH blades and get RotorTech/CarbonTech/Funkey3D
The C/G of these blades is further inward
and they have a nice wide cord
You will be very happy with them

I'm stunned that you have CCPM interactions
My Lepton has always been one of the straightest flying CCPM heli's
The CCPM setup is very easy and works exceptionally well
Get some help from others - this should be easy to sort out
(Check that you elevator grub screw has not come loose!)

On 4S you should be running a 21T pinion
that's what I ran on Kora 15-12 and 4S
~2800 rpm on the head and no bogging
I'm now running 5S and 18T like Rotodingo

I think you meant Spartan 760 - not Spectrum
I'm very surprised that it's drifting
Does the heli have vibrations in idle up?
Re-mount the gyro with the thin tape, the metal plate
then the thick tape and the Spartan on top
But I must stress that something is wrong
You either have a vibration
(something bend or the head is not centered on the spindle)
or have not initialised the Gyro correctly
or the wires to the Spartan are too tight
or the Spartan is faulty

The T500 is not a rocket
but it does track through the air very nicely (as does the Lepton)

The Protos certainly is a rocket
(but it's a bit over priced for a plastic fantastic)

Lepton is the lightest 500size heli with push-pull CCPM system. Honestly, I did many modifications on my Lepton but you don't need to. All you have to do is to use 70mm CF tail blade from Readyheli.

You fly Lepton with 6s2000mah for 4mins with 3D meanwhile you need to use 6s2600mah to fly T500E.

However, T500E is a great deal too. One low price contains everything you need, CF main blade, CF frame, motor, ESC & built-in BEC and you can change to TT.

I tried my friend's T500E for 20 flights(I did the setup myself.) and I still don't like how it flies. I just don't like the feeling.

If you have a friend who is flying one of them ... ask and try them first and then you can choose ... or buy both ...

In Hong Kong, there are maybe 100 fliers of T500E meanwhile only 5-10 Lepton fliers.

The Protos is almost 100 grams lighter than the Lepton

Same here in Sydney, maybe 100 TRex500's to ~8 Leptons

I think I'll just re-set my Lepton with SAB blades (maybe even Radix when they're in stock) and 5s 3300 25c FP packs and see what happens. I do get some vibration, so we'll see what's causing that. Could be the reason the tail goes out. I agree that it has incredibly fast cyclic -- faster than any of my other birds.

Yes, Jafa, I meant Spartan... sorry.

Thanks for the opinions so far!

I don't know what causes your vibration. I just want to share what we found the tail vibration. I found if we do not tighten the bell enough + high performance battery, then the tail will shake with high headspeed. If we pull the bell very tight, then it will be less vibration.

We guess it is because the bell touch the inner wall of the boom so it makes the tail shake or the whole tail boom shake. If we use the short boom, it has less vibration.

Just wanna share what we found!

You should also listen for the belt hitting the inside of the boom - it makes a high pitch tink - definately tighten her up

Try just changing the pinion - 21T
You've got all the right gear otherwise
You're close to having her go very nicely

I have also found that the head dampers hold the spindle too tight
I can land, pull one blade grip, spool up and the vibration is gone

The belt is pretty snug, and I'm actually thinking the canopy is what's causing the vibration, as I'm using an HDX canopy with only 2 grommet holes, which means the front of the canopy moves around a bit during flight. When I fly without a canopy, the tail is fine. Hah! Why didn't I think about that before?
