Converting a nitro Heli to an electric, Point of view.
hi guys,

When we come to convert a 90 nitro heli to electric , I think there is a first question to awnser : What do we want???

The problem with electrics is that we can get whatever we want, it is only a matter of compromise.

We must not compare the electric propulsion plant with the nitro propulsion plant, it does not work the same way.

A nitro plant (plant is including Engine, Exhaust, Fuel+% nitro, regulator, throtle servo, etc) will have a maximum power and that's it. Any modern 3D 90 Size heli is designed to support this power in flight in any configuration. It' almost impossible to damage a 90 Heli in good condition only by flying it, even hard, with a nitro plant. When we go above the maximum torque of the plant, the revs start to reduce.

An Electric power plant (Motor + Controler + batteries) has to be considered differently. The motor+ controler are only there to convert the power of the batteries into power on the rotor. When we ask too much to the electric motor, it will simply draw more amps from the batteries to keep its RPM. As long as the batteries can supply amps, and as long as the motor and controler can support these amps (and not burn...) the propulsion plant will go on.

This is, in my opinion, where the problem starts to Happen. The power these electric plants we are using now are so high that we are not anymore within the original design of any nitro Heli... So it is not surprising that things like gearing start to break.

If we want to be on the safe side, we can just look for a little more power than the nitro version (by putting 1 or 2 degres of max pitch at same revs for example), this is already very nice and we will preserve our machines and our batteries. This is what I do

If we want the maximum power available, It will be amazing because the power we can get now is really massive, but we will have to redesign a part of the heli to accept it.

It's a matter of choice, with electrics everything is possible, that's why it's so nice...

bye.
