Purpose Built Turbine
Hi all

Well I have been reading these forums for a while now as my ultimate goal in the next couple of years is to own a turbine. I find it quite amusing that you fellas seem to scrap more than the Align/Avant boys and you even know each other

Anywho, for those of you who are in the know with manufacturers, I would appreciate some insight on something. I have been looking around and there does not seem to be a vast amount of purpose built turbines. By this I mean like the Odessey, zealous, hotcat etc. I quite like the look of the zealous (is that the German bird?) but the rest are really quite ugly (sorry to those who own one). I very much like the look of the Cuatro/Predator conversions but they are just that a "conversion" and require a bit of work to get them completed (not to mention parts from a numbers of suppliers).

Given this, what is the likelihood of new purpose built turbines coming to the market in the future or is it because these are so specialized we are really stuck with conversions? I think my ultimate would be a nitro manufacturer making a purpose built bird for the smaller wren turbine (the 44 is it?).

Anyway, thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I can speak for the hOTCAT,

This has now been discontinued, it really was a mix /match, it was a jet cat base plate and boom, the main shaft came in the mechanics of the PHT3,

it was then a Robbe head, tail,

The replacement is really now the powercat or jetcopter, both are made and designed around the PHT3, the beauty of this mechanics is it is so versatile, you put on a boom tail drive a head and tail of your choice, base plate, and thats really it, as all the radio gear fits into the mechanics even 4 servo CCPM.

The Odyssey is again another set of mechaincs desinged around a turbine - no conversion.

The rest i am afraid to say are conversions, so you need a donor kit, normally the best way, is to buy a second hand machine as a donor, the quatro is ok, i personally dont like rocking servo's, but those who have them rave about them, and a lot can be said of that...

The Bergen is another machine desinged and built by themselves around the Wren turbine... no conversion..

i am happy with my ugly machine it earnt the name the elephant dick at the Vario show.. but i desinged that myself, using Q/UK Raptor 90 head and other upgrades, and Peter ROb built it for me plus did some extra mods as well... so there is nothing atandard about my HOtcat apart from the tail.

Thanks Matt

There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of discussion on the Bergen on here. I actually don't mind the look of that one. Have you heard any opinions good or bad on the Bergen (intrepid is it?)

A big thing for me will be parts if I end up back in Australasia.

Cheers

My opinion of the bergen it is deffinatly a builders model.. some said it was easy to build and others have said it is certainly a skilled modellers build...

But those that have them rave about them and well happy with the performance and build quality, along with the service and back up provided by Chris Bergen.. there is a cracking video of it, doing reasonably hard 3d, tick tocs, pie dish, and other manvouers.

Most of the bergen people have been banned on this site for breaking forum rules, so you need to go over to the other site.... for answers to questions

I like the look of the Bergen. If you can build a MA machine than you can build a Bergen. The wren turbine doesn't have a governor yet and that leads into some debate. Obviously it can fly without one. I just don't know how simple it is to set up. It's also not a giant heli and looks the part of a sport helicopter which I think is a positive. I wanted to test fly one and was told they would put you on their buddy box but I never had a chance to get down that way. Someone had a synergy with a turbine in it but I think he modified that himself.

in two weeks i will tell you, and have a video to go with it as well...

Havoc nice to see you post in the real world ( not off topics)
Any turbine you go for you wont be disapointed with, all are great and will give you years of life..provided you look after them,
There is no trickery to setting up them up...

Oh no it's Bell Bloke! Well I have to put my bit in don't I, so here goes. I'm not going to rant on about how great the Predator is or how reliable it is or how powerful and compact it is, oh no.
I'm not even going to harp on about how cheap and easy it is to convert to a turbine or the amount of 'Bling' you can get for it if you are so inclined, no my lips are sealed........
I could even go on about the massive strength of the drive train and how brilliantly the Predator flies, but I won't.

What I will say is that with the Predator, you get an exotic performer with Turbine cache, without paying exotic prices, I mean this turbine is a bargain. What's more is that they are all over the world and it seems as though they have been around as long as the Porsche 911, so they will be with us for sometime to come.

Nuff said.........

I don't know anything about the best sport turbine but my experience with Jakadofsky has been great. I would like to see how the Jak Pro will 3D just to say I did it but I am content to have it in a scale heli.

The new heli by the people who make the 3D-MP looks like it will be a winner. It uses the Wren 44 and is a proper production model from what they show on their video thats on here. Might be well worth holding out until they release this model.

No, you're not stuck with conversions. Here are a few ships that I am aware of ready to go turbine from the get go:

PowerCat TS

PowerCat (similar to the original HotCat Matt mentioned above)

Zyclone

Additionally, I know a few helis are being designed (and may even be out by now) around the very small PHT2 mechanics that could actually see some true 3D turbine action (i.e. hard tic-tocs, piro flips...). Not my cup of tea exactly but it will be cool nonetheless.

Hi Jonty,

In all honesty - it's not a cheap machine - BUT it flies fantastically.

When ordered, it takes around 3 -4 weeks for delivery and comes ready built. You have to fit your engine and r/c gear.

I have not found a need for any spares as yet, so prices are yet not know.

If you pm me your e-mai address - I'll forward a PDF file of the manual.

If you want to see it fly, let me know as I fly up in the Hatfield area.

Sparkhead,

You would need to make sure it is the later EVO 2S version.

The others are not for the 2 stage engine.
