I have come to the conclusion many years ago that California is ran by idiots. It has now been confirmed. In LA at the Santa Monica airport people buy houses that back right up to the runway then complain that they can hear airplanes.

Hmm, whats wrong with this picture. OSHA is trying to get rid of noise and Ca wants more noise! I knew Ca was off the wall but this is ludicris. Guess the cars are so quiet that the seeing eye dogs can't hear them either. Gotta be a LEFT coast thing.Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

Electric and hybrid vehicles may be better for the environment, but the California Legislature says they're bad for the blind.

It has passed a bill to ensure that the vehicles make enough noise to be heard by visually impaired people about to cross a street.
I dont want to sound insensitive but...

Even if they heard it coming, would they know which way to go to avoid it?

I mean come on.

Like putting brail on vending machines buttons, you might be able to tell which ones you are pushing but what are you buying?

IIRC a blind person's hearing is usually more attuned than a person who can see. So they should know which direction the car's coming from.

indeed they can hear it coming...no argument there but that still does not answer the question.

and...what is IIRC?

For the blind, pausing at the curb and listening is one of the ways they determine if its safe to cross. I could see where electric/hybrid vehicles could be an issue for them. What about bicycles by the way... more of them I'd guess anyhow.

Perhaps a better solution is to detect the vehicle/bicycle via sensors, and have a auditory warning at the cross section which warns of an approaching vehicle, and tell what direction its coming from. The Tone would give direction, the volume level tell how close. Just a thought, rather than making every car carry some technology to emit noise or a signal.
Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

"If I Recall Correctly".

I don't think they'll need to legislate adding noise-makers to electric cars. I think the market will do that quite nicely and these will become options on all "quiet" vehicles.

Then the secondary market will sell optional noise-packages so you can pretend any sound you like... with links to the throttle, steering and brakes to simulate the type of driving you want to project.

Let's see, I'll have the "Jet Powered" option with "Afterburner" for fast starts, a "Sonic Boom" at 80MPH, the "reverse thruster" braking and squealing tires for hard corners.

Every ethnic teenager out there would buy it and I'll be RICH!
