3 Flights under my belt!!
So, my maiden flight was totally solo(my buddy was late&I couldn't wait)and really had me shakin' in my boots. As I pulled my brand new helicopter into a hover, after skidding around the ground and almost tipping over a couple times, I almost had what looked like control. Holding at around 12 or 15 feet, I fought to keep control of the tail as it drifted to the left. I flew a couple involuntary circles when I adjusted my trim to correct the tail drifting, but basicly kept control and maintained my altitude. Thats when the wind came up in sudden and continuous gusts. Each one blowing my little heli further and further away as I flew circle after circle trying to bring her back for a safe landing. Each time, I would get it close and try to land, but, as the RPMs dropped the heli just seemed to float there and the tail would drift and I was off in another circle. After a few attempts like this I decide to try and set it down as it's being blown down field and hope for the best. Preparing for the worst, I finally get my little heli close enough to the ground to try and slow it down with something that resembled a flair. Just as the tail drops and I'm ready to add a little collective, something touched a tall brushy weed, I dumped the collective, and my baby disappeared in the brush. When I got there, I unwrapped the weeds from the main blades, got everything turned off and started the damage assessment. To my surprise, the only thing damaged was the very tip of one of my stock wood blades had split the plastic covering but no real damage to speak of. The weed cushioned the crash enough that after a very close inspection and some recharging, I was back in business.

I had one of my buddies make some adjustments to my settings and fly it around a bit to make sure everthing was as it should be. He gave it the thumbs up and handed me the radio. The next thing I knew,I was holding in a pretty steady hover and almost looked like it has on my sim for the past 9 mos. Everything was going good so I moved into FF with some circles and figure 8s. Then I tried some transitions from FF to hover and landing. All with no drama, aside from my sweaty palms and vibrating thumbs. I even tried a couple stall turns before it was time to land. I was so excited it was all I could do not to dance around like I was 10yrs old on christmas morning. Unfortunately, the wind came up before I could complete my next charge and I decided to pack it in. The wind did let up later that evening, so I got in one more successful flight with more of the same circles, 8s, stall turns and a few landings. All in all, I think the 9mos of sim time really paid off. Now I just have to wait for the wind to stop blowing so I can burn through some of my new batteries.

I'd like to thank everyone that has helped out a newb like me on this forum. I don't think I could have gotten to this point without the advice and encouragement I've recieved over the past 10mos from the countless members that answered my every question even though they've answered that same question 4 times last week. It's these people that make this such a great hobby to be a part of. Thank you.

Thats all for now. I'll try and get a video of my progress up soon. I have to wait on a friend for that one so stay tuned. Thanks again you guys!

-Keith

Yep, you read correctly. Mind you, I've been flying a sim(G3.5)for about 8mos and can do some hard 3d. Funnels, hurricanes, rainbows, tic-tocs(not so good), stall-turns w/ all kinds of aileron and rudder tricks at the top, fast inverted in all orientations, and a few other tricks usually find thier way into my sim flights. I crash sometimes of course but hey, I've only been flying for 8 months.

My 4th flight was pretty fun right until the end. I did a whole bunch of stall-turns with some 540s and 900s at the top. I even did half a tail-down funnel, but I got scared and pulled out before I made a complete 360 and just flew it into a figure 8. Then I landed after a few more 8s to wipe the sweat off my hands and thought I would just get "1 more minute" on this battery. Then, you guessed it, 30 seconds after retake-off mt ESC cut my power to half and I turned it on its side and bent the feathering spindle and ate 1 blade. The repair is already done and I spooled it up and just barely got it off the ground on my back porch. Everything looked good so hopefully I can get some flights in the next couple days.

So thats where I'm at.
