IRCHA '08 Turbine Crash
Does anyone have any information of pics / vids of the turbine crash that happened saturday at the jamboree? Just wondering. I unfortunately turned my cam off just before it happened to conserve battery.

ya it was chris's turbine, i was right there. He was doing collective pumps and lost the gyro, it piroetted right into the ground and made the JR guys jump pretty high.

lucky it did not hit anyone. The heli itself wasnt too bad.

Chris who? just curious. could be dumb question, but I'm still new to the hobby. I'm glad to hear that his heli wasn't too bad. I'm also glad it didn't catch fire or hit anyone in the process.AMA Member #914650

I tried searching for Chris Bergen on this forum, and it says he's restricted to it and hasn't been on for almost 180 days or so. maybe he's on another handle?AMA Member #914650

Crash
I was there with Chris when it happened, however it really was no more exciting than any other heli crash with the exception of it being a turbine. It did get the attention of the JR pilots since it flew right by them. Ronnie O had his dancing Crocs on so he was able to swiftly move out of harms way. The heli only needs a standard crash kit installed and it will be ready to fly again. The turbine was re-fired shortly after the mishap and was fine.

The biggest point I would like to make is the safety line we have in place and for this reason. In years past we have had large groups of people standing at the flight line but with the safety line we started last year and the way most everybody obeyed this year. I will say from all the IRCHA officers and I will speak for Chris too thank you for everybody staying behind the safety line that made the out come of this incident a positive one (except for the heli).

One final note on Chris, when it happened he went straight to those around to make sure everyone was ok and let his pit crew tend to the heli. Not until he was sure everyone was ok did he worry about the damage to the heli. I tip my hat to a 1st class individual in Chris Bergen.

Yeah I'll second that on Mr. Bergen. Class act and I hope to see him at a fun fly in Michigan this weekend.

Sorry about the turbine Chris.

I agree. He did a very good job of cleaning up the situation after the fact. I'm also very glad that no one got hurt in the incident. I'm also glad that Chris's heli didn't catch fire or explode. I also agree that the safety line probably saved lots of people this weekend with how some flights ended up.AMA Member #914650

Chris is a super nice stand-up guy. I was sorry to see his bird go down, but not surprised that there was no fire. Chris designs his machines with aluminum fuel tanks to prevent tank rupture in a crash - thus no fire. I can attest that the Bergen aluminum fuel tanks obviously prevented a fire in the two turbine incidents that I've experienced. This feature really improves the safety aspects of operating a turbine heli.

YUP, I saw it first hand from about 8 feet as it went right past us at high speed in a pirouette. We were doing the "Try The Vibe Fifty" campaign on the flight line just left of Chris and his demo. Lucky for me Team Horizon member Erik Anderson was spotting for our event and he began to yell to get outta the way as the heli approached us out of control.

The turbine heli did go right past us at 8 ft into the pit area near the cones IRCHA had set up for safety as folk stood to watch. It was headed towards the tents but stopped 1/2 way between the flight line and the tents as it hit the ground. NO FIRE! Chris's pit crew came running with fire extinguishers but no fire. AND guys at the cones scattered too...nobody got hurt from debris or else. It all happened in about 5 seconds!

Chris came right over to check if we were all ok. He shook my hand and never asked about the damage to his bird. He is a top shelf guy.

Hey mishaps happen...

IRCHA did a great job of policing the flight line for 1 pilot and spotter at each station. And they kept the crowd back to the cones for safety. I applaud them. Yes a few times they asked me to move as I got into the excitement as I watched others fly during the jamboree. I moved and thanked them for the reminder. I'd hate to think how this incident would have ended if they had NOT been strict.

THANKS to all who asked if we were ok. And thanks to IRCHA for running another great safe event.

The crash...it was spectacular! I'm very glad it ended on a good note and nobody got hurt.

I did jump right outta my CROC... <G> Broke the strap in fact...but a little E-6000 and it's good as new.

Here is my view of the crash. I was setting under our tent directly in line with the JR people at the flight line. They had a few people in line. The turbine heli was inverted and in a piro when it hit just behind the folks at the JR spot. The crash was a lot closer to the flight line and those people then our tent. Thank god no one was hurt.

Agreed. IRCHA did an excellent job at watching the flightline. I am also very glad that no one was hurt, and the heli wasn't that bad. I hate seeing heli's crash, due to the fact of how much work and money went into the machines, but again... its part of the hobby and the lifestyle. No one said it was cheap to fly.AMA Member #914650
