What's Wrong with this Picture??? - FIXED!!
Kinda had a bad auto this weekend. Can you see what's wrong with this picture???

So there I was.....

It was the last auto of the last flight on a windy day, and I was long overdue for Murphy to strike. The wind was in my face, and I pulled her up high and to the left for a nice auto. I must have done this hundreds of times. The nose dipped a bit, so I started to flatten her out, and then all hell broke loose!

The wind caught her with the disk forward and pushed her into a vertical dive. I tried to pull her up, but faster than you can blink an eye, she was smashing into the runway! She laid there on her side like a wounded animal, looking at me with those floppy "ears" and asking - what the hell is wrong with you dude - can't you fly me???

Now here's the interesting thing...

As you can tell from the pictures, the "hard landing" ripped the landing gear right out from under her. The heli was 20 feet from the landing gear. The impact was hard enough that it broke the frames on each side right behind the fuel tank. It also bent the boom right where it enters the frame. The spindle wasn't bent, but both the tail shaft and the main shaft were bent. The head button was also pulled out of the head.

But get this: The tail blades and the main blades were not broken! What the hell????? How is it physically possible to rip the head button out, bend a 10mm steel main shaft, and not break the CF blades! Even the flybar is as straight as an arrow!!! Holy cow the heli Gods were shining on me even if Murphy came out to play!

Sweeeeeet - One of my least expensive crashes ever!

(I'm going to fix the frames with a splint)

The grips more than likely pushed up on the head button and popped it off.

Good point! I'm sure you're right buddy!

But what about that main shaft issue? How do you get enough energy to the main shaft to bend it without breaking the blades?

rockohaulic,

Something stopped the blades enough to bend the main shaft you better give them blades a real good bend test but if the flybar is not bent it was probably something else. Looks like there is a little mark on the blade about 4" from the root where it swung around indicating an internal binding. Wonder of the torque tube could have been the thing that stopped it and that is actually what broke the frames? Crash mechanics are weird....

Where do you fly in Valencia? I live in Canyon Country we fly our nitros almost every weekend.

Ghost,

Woo Hoooooooooo - - -

Hey buddy - What do you think of my fix!!!

Now that's what I call a very professional "splint"!

I lightly sanded the "splint" left over from Mandy's crashed Sport, and epoxied it to my broken frames. If you remember, my frames broke on both sides right behind the fuel tank. I think this is going to hold up! And only 43 grams. If I replaced the frames, I was going to use 2mm frames, which would have been more than 43 grams.

What I REALLY like is how strong and stiff it makes the engine mount!

PS: On a side note about the 700N: I was looking at Jerry's (Zooms) Raptor 90 yesterday, and that is what frames should look like! That looks more like the proper thickness for a 90 heli, not what they give us on the 700N!!! The main frames were at least as thick as the bottom plate on the 700N. Align skimps too too much on the frames.
