If you are going to go out and buy the black head, buy the Viper head instead. That's what many of the pros will be running. The black head is very good and better than the blue. But if you wan't to squeeze out every last drop of power, buy the Viper head.

Heat transfer of a heat sink is a balancing act. The effectiveness goes in the order of conduction, convection and radiation.

Conduction relies on the core temperature on one side and dropping down to ambiant temp on the other side. Shorter the distance, the better the efficiency as the material acts as a resistance in an electrical circuit.

Convection relies on heat transfer by a fluid (air in this case). The more the surface (fins), more effective the heat transfer.

Blue head has a lot more surface area than the black head so the convection transfer is better. But, due to longer fins, conduction suffers. Since conduction is more effective than the convection, in this case, it wasn't optimized properly or as effective as the black head.

Recap:

Conduction - less distance is better
Convection - more surface is better

Both means of heat transfer counter the effectiveness of the other method.

Again, it is a balancing act.

Most things in the RC industry has been developed by trial and error method as opposed to relying on the mechanical engineering simply due to the lack of resources and or funds. Finite element analysis on the heat transfer model would have shown the best solution but my guess is that they opted for tried and true method.

But, I would check with James at OMI for effectiveness on HZ prior to buying one.

OK then, the days of the viperhead on my SZ-H are numbered. After getting a 91H, I will be smashing the bejesus out of the two new SZ-PH (2 of them) with a sledge hammer.

Actually, since they are new and not working, I'll see if Great Planes will exchange them for 91HZ. Wishful thinking.

Also, run .012 on the shims. The motor has the .008 installed. Add the .004. The Viper head comes with a .008 and a .004 shim.

The diff between the black head vs the blue is nothing at all. every one keeps saying it cools better when in fact it dose not at all. the reason there is 2 heads is for different helis have diff fan shrouds and the o.s head could not fit in them without modding the shroud. so o.s and align came out with the shorter head ti fit any heli fan shroud without cutting or any modding. it tells you guys this right on the site but everyone comes up with this that it cools better. there is no way. any ways look it up you will see that iam right. both are great motors they are just the same but the blue head cost a little bit more. the viperhead is a low pro as well to fit into any heli without modding it. o.s and align are trying to reach out to the whole market and not have any one not want to get it know they will have to make it fit. now its no problem. the motor will fit any just like the ys. this is the one and only reason they have 2 head options.Fly Hard,Crash Hard,Upgrade, Align,AMA#906056
