I have already tried it. You need the modified pcb with the additional driver hardware AND the Firmware to support the timing elements.

I tried it when the 9XII Limited first came out here in the UK.

DSX9/9303 2.4GHz backlit screen
I have revised the modification that I posted above (11-23-2008). I have developed a kit for this with a preassembled EL driver, voltage regulator and EL panel cut to fit a 9303/DX9. This version only draws 39mA, so you can just leave it on all the time if you want (total TX draw without the panel is over 100mA anyway), and the inverter does not "whine" like the previous version.

The tradeoff is that you do have to peel the reflective foil off the back of the LCD panel (and that of course voids the warranty). I have sold a bunch of these over on RCG; never thought to come back here and post as well. Small electronics skills (soldering and such) are required, or a friend that has them, plus nerves of steel. It's an easy mod to do...takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on how fast you want to go. Realigning the LCD panel (pixels) during reassembly goes wrong about 10% of the time from what I have been told, but it's an easy fix to just realign them again. Even I don't get it right the first time (and I have probably had my X9303 and XP9303 LCD panels apart about 50 times experimenting with this).

If anyone is interested PM me over on RCG (I am "hilgert" there as well), or here on RR (I rarely check here, but will try to remember). This is not a selling thread, so I'll provide financial details in a PM response to those interested. I have enough parts for about 40 more kits, then I am "done" with this mod (never did it for the money, but I got swamped with requests once I did a few for friends...might help pay for a 12x if I decide I want the "uber radio".

Takes me about 30 minutes to build, test, pack and ship each one, and I have almost 20 pages of detailed instructions with lots of color photos (which my wife hates since the color laser runs out of toner sooner...). If it could be done beforehand I have done it in the kit.

Pictures attached of what it looks like...it's not quite as blue in reality as it looks in the picture. The brightness is "just right" for viewing at night without going blind, and and really helps inside the house or in the shade. Viewing during normal sunlight seems to be the same as before to me.

I purchased a kit from hilgert and everything worked out great. His instructions are very thorough. It took a little trial and error to get the pixels realigned, but now that it's all together you cannot tell that I performed the "upgrade". It definitely looks factory. I am not sure on the battery consumption yet because I just put a new FP 11.1v 3S tx pack in my radio.

Great job hilgert! It's definitely worth the price and work!

Just did the back light mod to my 9303. I used the 60.00 kit offered by a member on rcgroups. Took a couple tries to get the lcd lined up and working. Works great! I will do my other 9303 next. Should take me a third of the time to do now that I understand it how the lcd works and how to align it.

I also ordered a auto timer circuit switch to automatically start the countdown time on throttle movement. Hope it fits with the backlight mod

I also have a lipo in it so power shouldn't be a problem.

Completed project is very nice!

I get the backlit by selling my x9303 for a x9503.

Interesting

So, you have a toggle switch to control on/off function and a dimmer switch to control brightness.

Did you buy a mod kit?

Did the mod kit come with the toggle switch and dimmer?

Switches
What about the switches?

I guess I could get those from an Electronics store.

I've been thinking about getting the kit as well for the last couple of months.
