I received a Hurricane 550 with full CNC head, swash and bellcranks,
61/19/42 gears.

I'm trying to sort out the best Motor/esc/pinion/bec combo for sport
aerobatic flying and long flight times.

I have a Z30a-1110 motor and a RCP 35/18/11 1100 red-end bell motor sitting here.

I'd like to keep my battery investment low, so either some Zippy/Hextronic Lipos or a123 setup.

I've read the pros on the Tonic-X (Z-Power) z20a-980 and the Scorpion
HK3026-1210, but I don't know if I should just use one of the motors I have or change to something different.

I have two sets of thunder tiger 550 CF main blades here, but might change to the cheaper Gaui 500mm CF blades. Not sure...just trying to keep potential crash costs down.

I really need some help sorting this out. Any insight you can provide to help me reach my goals would be much appreciated!

This is a very light heli and staying with 500-520mm blade will be very good. For sport flying, woodies should be fine for both performance and economy.

If you go with the Z30 motor you will need bigger lipos to feed it...the power will be much better than a Z20 but at the expense of the batteries...

I agree with the smaller blades...I'm using 515 Cf and theyfly real well....as do the woodies...

I'm using the Z20-980 with 14t pinion and get about 1900 headspeed...and 6 -7 in of flight on 2500 polyquest 25c lipos.

I run 550mm carbons on the stock 1100kv motor (similar to the Z30 not quite as efficient), Phoenix 80A ESC, 13t pinion on 4000 and 5000mah lipos and get 7 and 8min flights. I got about the same running a 14t pinion but I dropped down a tooth when I was still running the stock 50a ESC which is to small for that stock 1100kv motor.

Most of my LHS sell the TT 550mm carbons for less than the Gaui carbons (they only had one set and I think they were 550's also).

What sort of flying are you going to be doing? If you're going to do 3d I'd stick w/ the Z30. But if you don't need the extra power then the Z20 will give you better flight times. I'm not sure about the Scorpion motor, I put a HK2221-8 in my Trex 450 to liven it up, but I think that HK3026's would do the opposite in my Hurricane since they're rated at about 500w less than my stock motor, although the whole line has a higher kv and low amp draw so you might be able to fly w/ as much pop as the stock motor but get longer flight times w/ the right gear setup.

I see you have listed both your motors for sale. if you have flown any 50 glow heli you will probably not be happy with the Z20, and I would definalty try both the Z30 you have and the RCP before you sell them, I am flying the RCP and love it although i would love to test it against the Z30 you have. I beleive the 2 motors you have are the best choices for the Hurricane!! but the Scorpion motor might be in this group as well but too early to tell. the Z20 will give better flight times but unless you are a begginer or a pure sport flyer you most likely will not be happy with it's performance!

i'll be doing mostly sport flying, eventually mild 3D

Ultimately, I want as long a flight time as possible with decent power.

Like I said I would fly both motors before I sold them. remember it is hard to tell online what is meant my decient power! both motors you have depending on what batteries you have will outperform a Raptor 50, the Z20 will be more like a raptor 30, they fly great but at some point a 30 glow gets boreing. now if you are learing the 30 might last a long time. if you are currently flying a glow 50 then going back to the performace of a 30 won't cut it! the Z-20 motor can fly nicely on 2200mah packs for 7 minutes, the RCP and Z30 require 25c 2500mah packs or better. 2500 packs will give 4-6 minute flights depending on how you fly
