I think that is the amount of air the tail blades grab to make a correction. Or in other words, the amount of pitch the tail blades have. Is that it?

The gain setting is how sensitive your gyros reactions to movement or even a viberation... That is why a slight vibration in your tail will turn into a wag if the gain is to high... The pitch is all set mechanically first...
