I'm fortunate to have a good LHS about 20 min from my house. It's the same one my I got my very first 3 CH trainer plane from in I think 1984, the Carl Goldberg Eagle. I think they even have the same carpet today Their prices are about the same as on line. Only a tiny bit more in a very few instances. A dying breed.

I haven't bought everything from them, but most. They are about a 15 min drive from a local heli-only field. I've crashed, bought new parts, and been back in the air the same afternoon. Repeat cycle..

Another shop only 2 miles from my house had broader mix of hobbies, so RC was about 25%, the rest was models, games, etc. The folded last spring.

must have been a downdraft

We have 5 lhs in town, one does only trains, one only cars. Two of the others do only eflites and small electric stuff. One of them, used to do trex stuff but hasnt really the stuff cause it "sits to long on the shelf." He does very little plane stuff either.
The last is a one man show with high rent and caters mostly to cars. The owner does fly though and has a couple of bigger helis in the store. Some trex stuff, not much. He told me flat out, that he has rent to pay and if it sits on the shelf, it doenst pay that rent. He doesnt have any large helis for sale. They just dont sell fast enough.
So i go in and buy stuff, need it or not, and a little higher in price or not. When i need help, he offers it and has given me advice and even some used parts. As much as i like the online prices and availability of stuff, the LHS is my first place to look.
whew! my .02$

also RR has kept me from the hobby shop, which is good. for example, why go spend 469.00 on a blade 400 when i can get one off here for around 400.
both my trex 600's came from here. this site is great for buying and saving money.

I think Hobby Town has made it pretty clear that they are not very interested in serious helicopter business (there may be a very few exceptions). And until there are more of us that won't change. They are a large company and go where the $ is. I live in a fairly large city and we don't have one decent (heli) hobby store in the immediate area. There are however 2-3 decent plank hobby shops. I drive over 100 miles to get to the closest hobby store that carries helis. Then again, there are less than a dozen heli flyers out of over a million people here. Guess that says it all. I did not know what a 3d helicopter was 2 years ago. Never saw or heard of one. What we need to do is find a way to expand our hobby. As mentioned before, if poker can be on ESPN and all over tv why can't helis have some type of "X games" event? I say we start blitzing ESPN with emails, send them some links to some Szabo videos.

I wish I could just walk right in and get what I want. They usually order it just like I do and it seems to be hard to find for them. If I order it myself then at least I have no one but myself to blame if I get the wrong parts. My shop is strictly cars and it helps when I can get advice from the pros. That is why I am here where you guys have always given good scoop.

look at skateboarding, it was a pretty undground thing until it started to be seen on tv due to the x games. now skateboarding is a lot more main stream. i think more publicity would yield a huge growth in our community.

Not all hobby shops are as good as your hobby shop, I have asked a local one here about matching online prices and he just says "no way" too much retail traffic to care about the hobby guys business.

Online shops all the way for me unless I need something small like a servo rebuild kit or something...
It gives me an excuse to go in and see if they have gotten anything new... Which they haven't for the past 10 years

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

It will be online shopping for you all the way even when you only need something small like a servo rebuild kit or something... if you choose not to support your local model shop.

Same old story. I guess i'll just send my money out of state or overseas. OK, i do know that most of the stuff we want here in the USA as far as helis goes is not made here. But that's not the point!!!! You guys really need to support you local shops!!!!

So be it. I am NOT going to pay twice as much for the same thing I can get online. I get much better personal service from heliprozs then the local hobby shops. At least the guys at heliprozs "sound" like they are happy you called.... Most hobby shops on the other hand.....

I went into a hobby shop in Topeka Ks. for the first time last week, the owner followed me around like a puppy, he acted like he thought I was going to steal something. He wasn't rude when we talked, but I could tell he watched everyone like a hawk.
And if thats a problem in his store, I guess I understand, but it still made me unconfertable to be followed. I called a local guy afterward and told him I had just visited their hobby shop and the first thing he asked " Did he follow you around the shop?"

Nothing but respect and good treatment from Ron's or HP or when I order from Century.

If we had a good hobby shop that carried even just a few good parts and offered them at close to same prices I would support them in a heartbeat.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

I get 90% of my stuff from my LHS, he does mostly helis and has most everything we need. He is also a member of our club and closely matches the online store prices, except when I need something and he does not have it in stock he often takes what we need off his own machines and lends then to us so we could fly until he gets our parts. He is often at the club and helps us with set-up and flying. He gives free body box lessons to his good customers.

Most of the shops in my area have been clsing steadily for the last few years. Just last month another one closed in Manhattan. I think the economy is doing them in and they really can''t compete with the larger chain hobby shops and the on-line shops.

your telling me to support my lhs, but at the sametime your telling me to get the product as cheap as i can. im not going to go in there and give him offers, damn it dude.

online stores need support, the people on this forum need support, im helping people in my hobby community. the owner of the lhs drives a brand new vette he got last year, after he sold the one he had before, i think he is doing fine.

i bought a pair of blades off you would you have rather me went to the lhs and placed a order for them?

The closest shop to me is 60 miles. 120 miles round trip. At gas at almost 3.50 gal, I will wait 2 days on parts. Shipping is cheaper. If I'm going that way for something else, I always stop and buy fuel, but he has very few heli parts. So in my case, I order most parts online.

I am with CJames!!

I think that some of people that work at some of the LHS need a really good training course on customer services and manners.

It is unbelievable what I see sometimes in some of the LHS, in terms of the way they treat their customers.

I know sometimes, you get customers that a little bit of a pain, and I understand that. But there is no reason for them to treat everybody as if you are there to create trouble, and also as if they are doing you a favor.

Some of LHS are learning the hard way. But some of LHS do not want to chance their way.

That is the worse when some guys that work at hobby shops treat us like #$%^. WHY? Well, I find that this happens at major chain hobby shops. That is why I found a sweet LHS called Funfly Hobbys in Riverside, CA and some new cool friends that care and are willing to help.

I still by online if my LHS dosn't have the part I need but, They get UPS daily and all I have to do is ask and they will order it. I think this is better so if you need a part that is important and you miss UPS because you were not home, that can really suck, but, if it's ordered at your LHS, then you know it will get there with out you needing to wait another day because you missed UPS.

I support my LHS and online vendors, I'm lucky to have 3 LHS
within 10 miles so if I need something fast I go there, But
if I want something I shop online for the best price as LHS
are limited to what they carry in heli stuff so I balance want's
with needs and purchase accordingly! Personaly I don't care
if the counter person is nice to me as long as he sell's me the
parts I ask fore! If we bought based on personality and knowledge
of people most propably wouldn't leave the their houses these days!
