Whenever I turn on my computer an update pops up for updating Java, whatever that is. Do I need it?

I Fly So Good: BECAUSE I'M SPONSORED! ...what's this bill here?

It's also a major pathway for mischievous stuff you don't want. If you switch to Mozilla's Firefox browser, you can control which sites can execute java scripts and which can't. I haven't had a virus or a bot in 3 years (knock on balsa).

Actually Java is far more secure than the alternatives.

A lot of programs that aren't designed just for windows will use Java as a way to use the same GUI on multiple platforms. For example OpenOffice (which runs on just about every known operating system).

Java is a general purpose programming language. It is NOT javascript as gimbalfan implied (thats a different language that does different things -- its for scripting). Java works as sort of an interperator for its own special type of computer code, half way between the native code the CPU runs and human readable langauges. This allows it to run on practically anythign and is why its used on websites (occasionally) or cross-platform programs.

Its useful, secure (again its NOT javascript, the only thing they have in common is the name) but not very commonly used in websites or even for desktop applications, therefore you MAY not need it. But, its not anything to worry about or go out of your way to get rid of.

Its a common misconception, who'de have thought there would be two 'java' languages that both are used on the web.

Brendan Eich invented JavaScript
Introduced in 1995, JavaScript, an object oriented web scripting language, has become an international standard allowing web developers the ability to write Dynamic HTML that works on multiple browsers.

Brendan Eich
JavaScript was created by Netscape programmer Brendan Eich. The web scripting language was first released under the name of LiveScript as part of Netscape Navigator 2.0 in September 1995. It was renamed JavaScript on December 4, 1995.

In "Making Web Pages Come Alive" Brendan Eich said the following about how JavaScript came about:

I came to Netscape in April 1995, after seven years at Silicon Graphics and three years at MicroUnity Systems Engineering. Netscape was about a year old then and was looking for someone to work on a scripting language or some kind of language inside the browser that could be used to automate parts of a web page or make a web page more dynamic. Java had been around for five years at First Person and Sun, and had been retooled for the web in late 1994. Netscape was the first Java licensee, so the issue became: Can we do just Java, or do we need another language?

Brendan Eich was named Web Innovator of the Year by c/net's Builder.com in April 1998.

I have been told that java is to javascript as car is to carpet. (i.e. they have little, if anything in common)

As I understand it javascript is used on websites and java allows you to create standalone applications. It's all good fun, isn't the internet great

javascript is a web only based code language that runs the browser functions well browsing a website, once you leave that site, all the function from that site are cancelled. no previous installations are required

Java, is a computer program and you install it on your computer, some websites require a java installation to run(usually video, or intereactive)

THEY HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON

and both can be used on the inter-web

Tidbits of the day: javascript is also called ecmascript (though I've yet to hear anyone call it that). And java was originally designed for use inside set-top boxes.

Yep, Sun intended it to be cross platform not only for PCs but smart appliances. Like the refrigerator that inventories everything and makes you a grocery list.
