Hello All

Yes...it had to be us

For some reason the cap that is bolted to the motor mount came unscrewed in flight. Didnt damage the heli(autoed down) but the threads that hold the cap on are compleatly stripped....

Motor worked great and has great efficiency. I have no clue as to why it came apart all that I know is it did for some reason. The only abuse the heli has been through is in flight.

Im wondering if this has happened to anyone else? What may have caused this for us?

Are you sure it threads? I ask because you mentioned they are stripped and that it came unscrewed. I dont see how it could be both unless the threads were damaged after it came unscrewed.

That sucks though. This is the first report I have seen on this. How many flights?

Yea, this is odd...first I have heard of this as well! Did you happen to crash it at one point?

No crash.

All I know is there was a sound, hold was hit and the heli was softly autoed down.

The heli was inspected and we found that the upper cap was off of the can. Now we can literally press the cap into the can...should only be able to screw it in... You can see the threads in the can and where the threads used to be on the cap.

Maybe the threads just gave out somehow and something else made the assembly come apart. We looked on the inside and everything looks good.... Heck we can hold it together and spool the motor up so everything is working.

The heli is pretty new but we put some flights on the motor but no more than about 30-40. These were all very hard 3d flights...there are a few vids up but I cant point them to you because its seen as advertising...

How could that unscrew, against the power leads at the other end, when installed? Those threads are a fine pitch and shallow, in aluminum. Poor machining could leave it as little better than a mild press fit, even though it was screwed together at the factory. You might need some very good photographs and skillful descriptions to convince Align that that were the case, maybe even before they'd accept it back to decide for themselves. If you go that route, try not do any real heavy online bashing of Align. It works sometimes, but most often it seems that Align will just dig their heels in.

Harder (whatever the hell that might mean) upright landings could cause the mass of the motor to work to slip the can off the end bell fit. It has happened in the past with some of the 450's.

If your fingers and eyeballs tell you that there has been no damage, like to the upper bearing in particular, a higher temp epoxy like one of Devcon's, or J-B Weld, would probably work for a repair.

EDIT:

In flight - vibration could easily work a bad joint apart. It wouldn't have to be a problem vibration either, except for the motor.

Yes that end cap.

We do auto the heli so it may touch down hard sometimes but nothing abnormal. And its flown very hard but that should really be an issue because its been tested pretty hard by Align as well.

We tried to get it seated again using 4 set screws but then the back cap came off... Either this motor hates us or we just have bad luck.

Do I think there is an issue with the motor...no. It has great power and is efficient. I asked this question to determine if its happend to someone else...but it seems ours is an isolated incident so I dont have a problem with purchasing another one.

To be clear this is not post to make anyone look bad its a post to figure out if my incident is isolated. The 500 package is awsome and I love it.
