I have a Bantam e-station 902. I would like to charge 2 5S 5000mah lipos at the same time. Should I be charging as a 5000mah 10s or a 10,000 10s?

Thanks

Charging 2 5cell lipos in series will make them a 10cell but keeping same mah. So it would be a 10s 5000.

Charging 2 5cell lipos in parralel will make them 5cell and doubling mah. So it would be a 5s 10000.

I would advice charging as 5s 10000 instead of 10s 5000. Its generally safer to charge in parallel than series. I am not familiar with your charger though.

I charge some packs in series, others in parallel. The key to this is two fold:
- both packs needs to be the same, and in a similar state of charge
- you need the right balancing lead

For charging in series, I made up a balancing lead so the two 3s packs acted as a single 6s pack. Because I use these packs in series to power my starter, they are always in a similar state of charge so this works well.

I often charge two 3s 2100 or 2500 packs in parallel, which I use in my Mini titan, or in series in the Rex 500. Hence both packs are in a similar but not identical state of charge. I managed to acquire a balancing lead from flight power for this, the connector to the balancer is in the middle of the lead, with connectors to the packs at each end. Two 2100 packs can be charged at 4 amps, which looks like 1C to the packs so this halves the charging time.

If you have the dual BP6 balancers you can charge them in serie as 10S 5000mAh. Otherwise, charge in parallel.

The current capability of the charger has an impact here. My Schulze chargers can only manage 5.5 amps, so charging such bigs packs in parallel wouldn't gain me much in terms of time saving. The chargers can do 11s so charging in series would be my preference BUT they'd have to be in very similar states of charge.

Of course your mileage may, and probably will, vary.

Thank you for all of your help. The packs should be in a similar state of discharge as they will be working in series. Is a balancer necessary when charging at 1C? I was told by the LHS that as long as I was charging slowly the cells would not become out of balance.

Thanks

The higher the charge current, the more you'll need a balancer. If charging at 1C you can probably get away without balancing for a few charges. I always balance on every charge since I see no reason to not to balance them.
