Hi guys. I'm having a hard time with tuning my engine. I changed altitudes and I know the engine was running really hot last time I flew it. (230 F) So I tried to tune it but it was so far off I couldn't get it to change temps. I have an OS-50SX (not hyper) and I've turned it 1 and a half turns from closed. When I started it up it wouldn't hover at full stick.

Another problem I noticed, that may or may not be related, is when I start spinning up the helicopter blades vibrate and make a horrible whirling noise at a certain rpm. I've checked the pitch and had it rechecked by someone else but we don't know what is wrong.

Any help is appreciated.

Go back to the book settings on the carb and start from there. Do the pinch test for the low needle and then do full power climbouts to set the high. Also check your fuel lines and filters for leaks or blockages.

The vibration may just be ground resonance at a certain RPM. Keep an eye on it in the hover and in flight to see if there may be other issues to look at. What dampers are you using? Did you lube them? Are you using a governor? What HS you running?

50SX tuning
salted,
Also check your head and back plate bolts. They may be loose.

How do I do the pinch test? Or if you could point me to a manual. I can't find it on os's website. They seem to only have the hyper version.

About the head, I'm not sure how much play should be in the grips. If I measure the up and down movement at the very end of the blade when I wiggle its about 6mm. That's about .5 degrees of movement. I have 640mm blades. They seem long but my hobby store assured me I can fly with them.

I also fixed a tiny bit of slop on the main shaft where it moved just enough to notice. Hopefully that was were the vibration was coming from.

I'm running a governor GV-1 with a head speed of 1850. It seems to get up to that headspeed and hold when I ran it last.

Pinch test = at idle pinch the fuel line going to the carb, it should take about 3 seconds to lean out and speed up. If it takes less it's too lean - longer too rich. That sets the low.

carb setting
My carb setting is 1 and 1/4. I have the os 50 sx non hyper also. It works well for me. Its just a place to start. I believe the manual says start at 2 turns out.
