I just purchased a Rebel XTI (is in the mail) and it came with the canon 18-55 lens. I haven't heard good things about this lense. I might use this for some AP although the A640 seems to do a real good job most of the time. I am just looking for a good all around lens. Mostly I will be shooting action shots of heli's, planes, full scale planes and some nature shots. I would like some depth on zoom. If anyone has a recommendation I would greatly appreciate it. Lastly, I wish I had an unlimited budget, but cost will greatly come into play. Since I'm not a pro, just looking for the best "bang for the buck" scenerio. I look forward to hearing what all you experts have to say. Thank you in advance.

I am deciding which lenses to get also. Lots of choices.

Prices, quality, convenience, weight, can't have it all

You will pay more for lenses than the body. A 17-85 lens will cover most "walk around" stuff. a 10-22 will get very wide angle landscape shots and a 70-300 will do for most tele shots.

An 18-200 is a fun lens, but with any zoom factor lens the optics will suffer at the extremes.

Sigma, Tamron, Tokina are all decent after market choices and a few bucks cheaper.

For heli work the kit lens is a good start.

Almost any lens will give very acceptable results. Heli, mast, walk around, all have different issues.

The canon 17-85 USM with IS is my choice if getting just one lens that you can use in almost all situations. It will cost as much as the XTi body, but the LENS is the camera.

I believe if you buy cheap, you buy twice. If you buy the best, you become a lens snob

I use a 18-200 DC Sigma lems on my 30D and very happy with it. I generally use it for aerial photography from full scale helicopters but still do use it for my other photography. Hope that helps
