Conversion...
The idea here is to buy a USED Stratus ...which you can get VERY cheap here and then convert it and sell off the nitro based parts...like the clutch stack etc...

the big adavantage of the Stratus is the fact that the batteries fit right in the middle of the heli and therefore the CG is PERFECT...

this results is VERY smooth rolls, flips etc...the ION X2 is a bit nose heavy and from what I hear it tends to corkscrew in moves?

Doesn't the stratos already come as an E Kit ? or did I miss something?

This big 90 class is intimidating, I currently have 6 flyable helis from 450-600 class, YET I feel like a beginner with some of the stuff you guys are saying, Its like a totally different heli conversation within a heli conversation. I'm sure once I get one it will all make sense.
I'm going to fly a 90 size nitro today, I'm not worried at all about flying this size but my knowledge of 90 size electrics is limited from what I have been able to gleam here on RR and the web.

Thanks for all the info so far and hope this class heli get more popular.

The MA Stratus has replaced the MA Fury and is glow powered. The MA Ion X was the flagship electric model based on the fury and has been updated to the ion X 2. As far as I know there is no Stratus electric other than the diy conversions.

I understand the buy cheep and convert Idea. But sence I have no experiance with 90 size helis I think getting an E kit to start with would be alot better for me. does someone make a conversion kit for the stratos?

CGbole here sells the motor mount. Other than that, you just need to purchase pinion adapter (6mm motor shaft recommanded) from MA (no part number) and 100T main gear. That is it.

My cousin got a Joker and I got an IonX. There is no doubt that the Joker is a work of art BUT it is more of a workhorse that is not designed for 3D. The IonX, on the other hand, is 3D capable which is why I got it. The only problem is that my skills are not yet 3D capable.

Be carefull of buying a Joker1 - part availability will soon be limited. Joker2 is great but will require a 12s setup.

besides parts availability, the Joker 2 is FAR superior IMO, the belt is better and overall the design is cleaner on the 2.
Fergus is correct about the 12S without a doubt.

There are 4 or more versions of the Joker. The machine comes in two varients. The maxi which has a longer boom and spins larger 800mm+ blades and is often used for Aerial Potography and the regular Joker.

The regular joker and Maxi Joker have been replaced by the Joker2 and MaxiJoker2 which have a new belt system from the motor, redesigned servo layout, larger battery compartment and a few other changes. Of the two V2 machines it is the regular Joker2 which can be used for 3d and is the machine featured in the earlier Szabo video. The Maxi Joker2 is the workhorse machine and is not suitable for your needs but can easily be converted to a Joker2 (shorter boom blades and a few minor other changes).

If buying second hand I would advise staying clear of the V1 machines which I think have another variant called the CF. Gerd the manufacturer has stated parts support will end in the not too distant future and motor options are also limited on this machine.

I fly the Joker2 and enjoy how it flys. I am only using equivilant of 10s lipo (12s2pA123) so its performance is not what it could be. On 12s lipo the machine is a totally different animal and 3ds well (As can be seen in the video which shows a stock machine on 12s flown by Szabo).

I have not flown the Ion in any of its guises so cant comment on its performance.

Good info Fergus! I didn't know that there was a varient of the Joker that was 3D capable out of the box so thanks for making that clear. I would love to comment about the 3D capabilities of the IonX but like I said, my skills are not quite there. I DO know that many people do 3D with the IonX because I've seen it done especially with the Neu motor and the latest Lipo and ESC technology. The IonX2 is a different story because it is capable of 12S out of the box and I hear the belt system is very nice. The IonX2 also comes as a ~$300 upgrade for the IonX so you know parts will be around for a while. I did similar research and decided on the IonX mainly because I knew it was 3D capable when my skills get there. They are both on the top level as far as E-Helis in 90 size so I dont think you can go wrong. Also, I got the IonX because my local retailer carries oodles of parts for the entire MA X-Cell series which reminds me, the IonX shares 90% (or more) of it's parts with the other MA 90-sized helis nitro OR Electric. IonX or Joker, you wont be dissappointed or so I hear. They are both pretty much on top of the food chain unless you are considering the Heinslet(sp?)helis which are like the Rolls Royce of helis.

Don't rule out a stretched logo600. The standard 600 3d with 10s is insane. The stretched versions on 12s would give anything out there a run for its money in my view.
