Whilst it all worked out OK it could have been `hero to zero' in a few seconds.

He may be the best pilot to have carried out this promotion but it doesn't fit with any guidelines of any national association that I know of.

What would people be saying if the helicopter had broken and hit someone in the face?

I know that we all accept that the hobby is inherently dangerous but we do our best to minimise the risks, anything that increases the risks has to be against the hobby that we all participate in.

Hi All,

These Align guys are out of control. One of these days it will be national news as someone's jugular is cut and he bleeds to death in front of the television cameras.

Makes me sorry I have two Align helis...

For those who easily become upset over this sort of public demonstration, there's plenty of much safer hobbies to choose from -- like knitting, quilting, embroidery, collecting ballerina figurines, gardening, fingerpainting . . .

Does it also make you sorry when those NASCAR guys crash and the drivers are killed, of parts of there cars come off and injure or kill the spectators.

"A crash in 1965 at Riverside, CA, killed one spectator and injured 3 others .... NASCAR" , "Gordon's hood struck a female spectator after a bolt securing the hood's tether failed, causing her to be hospitalized overnight", "A woman lost an eye after being hit by debris from Allison's car after it flew into the air and tore down nearly 100 feet of fencing."
"In July 1998, three fans were killed and six others injured at Michigan Speedway when a tire and suspension pieces from a crash during a CART race flew into the stands. Only 10 months later, three fans were killed and several others injured at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., from flying debris at a wreck during an Indy Racing League event."

And I thought R/C Heli's were Dangerous, And Guess what, Last time I checked NASCAR is still running. The Government has not shut them down. Spectators all still Allowed to CHOOSE to go to the Races even though they have been proven to be much more Dangerous than our Hobby. Go Figure.

NASCAR is still running...but BECAUSE of those incidents, saftey issues were put into place...i.e higher stronger netting infront of all spectator areas.......since then(10 years)...how many fans have been injured or killed at a NASCAR event?????

and for the record I am NOT a NASCAR fan...I respect the sport but find it hard to watch

Sound like your not a fan of any sport that has any amount of Danger in it. That's the so sad, you are missing so much in this life but I have to respect your choice because we live in a country that allows us freedom of choice. Unfortunately do to people like you we are loosing more and more of those freedom's.

???????????...I love football ,hockey, motorcross, superbike racing,UFC,boxing........but NASCAR...while I do respect what the drivers are doing, watching them make left turns for 4 hours just doesn't do it for me.......if I want to see all the crashes and good passes I watch sports center....all the stuff you need to see in a race in 10 min....other wise...on a SUNDAY......I'm flying, hitting the sim,or getting my helis ready..........no offense meant to anyone..its a great sport if thats your thing...its just not mine.......they need more road race courses...and maybe some jumps
Unfortunately do to people like you we are loosing more and more of those freedom's.
exactly how are we losing freedoms because I dont like NASCAR????....HELLO...thats what this country is about, freedom of choice

actually, I didn't say anything bad about NASCAR at all, just the opposite...they had issues, addressed them to make things safer, and moved on...just with DALE Sr....immediately after his sad death all drivers had to wear the neck restraint....they saw/had a problem, fixed it,to make it safer, along with safer cars(car of tomorrow)and they moved on....how does what I said make us lose our freedoms???

Just to argue, would anybody think it would be ok to have no barriers over the concrete wall height and just let whatever happens happen? Discuss......How about no walls period like in rally cars?

"I'm still waiting to find out how me not liking NASCAR is taking peoples freedom....I gotta hear this one"

NASCAR was an example of a Dangerous sport that People get hurt and killed at, yet it is still going on.

Statements like these are what take people's freedoms away:

"These Align guys are out of control. One of these days it will be national news as someones jugular is cut and he bleeds to death in front of the television cameras."

An recent example (reported here on runryder) of this was the flying club president in San Diego that wrote a letter to the county after the recent forest fires explaining the potential fire danger of LiPo Batteries. It didn't matter that no LiPo batteries have been identified as causing forest fire. The County banned the use of LiPo Batteries thus one more freedom taken away on speculation.

Freedom and paying the price for your actions go hand in hand. I don't believe in taking freedoms away from people with the intention of protecting them is in our best interests. With that being said there is no way I would let anyone land a heli on my head even if its Alan Szabo at the controls, however if someone is willing or stupid enough to try it then I'll be right there watching and waiting for them to F up.

In Nascar the payoff outweighs the risks they take as in many sports but in this example I highly doubt thats the case, its just not worth it, at least to me it isn't.

How much would you expect to be paid for Alan to land on your head? How much do you think that guy got paid and do you think it will make him famous?
