Now how the heck does he elevate one section at a time... lock it... and then elevate the next section?.....with a cable winch....?

go look at it... here..

he has basically a one section crank that is identical to the bottom section of any cable-winch-mast that pushes up one section, which you then lock, then lower the "pusher mast", re-hook it to the next section, and repeat.

I bet this system might be more stable at height than a purely cable/winch system, as the connections would all be tight... Although I have yet to build a normal winch mast, so I'm just shooting in the dark.. Any comments on stability?

How far up can you look if at all with this mount? I'm guessing only a few degrees above level?

I made the mount so it limits to a preset LEVEL. That way doing panos in the future it will not have any keystone effect when using very wide lenses.

I am assuming that the horizon should be center frame for panos??

Plus not sure when I have ever wanted to look up?

If you wanted to do spherical panoramas, say

Any distortion is removed automatically when you stitch the photographs together ...
