I want to clean slate a desktop computer that is about 5 years old. I have long since lost the startup disk and there is nothing on the computer worth saving. Can I simply borrow someone elses XP startup disk, dump my current OS and reload XP with another disk?

It depends...

Many disks supplied with computers only contain drivers specific to that computer (or just the manufacturer's range of computers). Some manufacturer's even go so far as to try to stop the disk loading on computers not made by them (Microsoft encourages them to do this to try to reduce piracy). If you can get a retail XP disk, you wont have that problem.

The other problem you might run into is the product activation code will have already been used by your friend's computer. You might not be able to complete activation without calling Microsoft.

Yes you can, but you will have to use your serial number to make it through the windows validation after install and you will either need your driver disk or you will have to go online to your computer manufacture and dowm load your current drivers. I would recomend you download the updated drivers and save them to a disk before you reload you operating system if you do not have the disk that came with the computer as you will ned the NIC card driver to get online after install.

A startup disk is very different that an OS install disk.

As far as OS disks, be careful. There are some XP OS disks (non-registered)that were pirated early on in the beta process and MS has caught up with the serial # of these. If you try to install any updates it from the MS site they will first download a time bomb then tell you that your copy is invalid.

Next reboot Windows will screw itself.

You can also contact your computer manufacture and ask them to send you replacement disks.

If your machine is 5 years old, then yes...

Computer hardware is obsolete by the time the end user buys it. Things update so rapidly that even new hardware is not the best.
