I think the best bang for the buck is the gy401/9254 combo. It will work fine on that SE even doing hard 3D.

The 401/9254 will work fine for now.
If you Just feel the need to spend some money the Spartan DS 760 and a BLS251 would be great.

Keep the 401 until you need a really consistant piro rate. Then move up to a 611/Spartan/Solid G.

Flew my Raptor 90 with a 401/9253 for two years and it sounds like your flying style is similar to mine. NO problems. I've heard the 401 falls down in fast backwards flight but guess what, I wouldn't know!

Just upgraded the R90 to a V-Max and took the opportunity to renew all the avionics. Went with the CSM 720 and JR 8900G this time, but hell it was time to upgrade!!

The GY401 is ok for starting out with a 90 but not that good for hard 3D.

The new Spartan DS760 seams to be the new Top Dog. I have one on my T-Rex and it’s incredable – especially with the new BLS251 rudder servo.

Ive heard this 'said' many times, and TBH it's because many people don't set them up correctly.

I no longer own any 401's but i have had plenty of them, and they hold in tailslides (sideways) and F/backwards no problem.

If you already have a 401 then i would stick with what you have, but keep on your toes if it is mated with a 9254 servo.

I used the 401 with 9253 and then 9254. It was great as a start because it was so easy to set up. When I wanted more I put the 611 set in. It just dropped in and has worked perfectly from day 1.

I have 2 spartans now for my 'Rex 450 and Raptor 50, but the 611 is excellent for a big heli as there is space for the amp and its easy to see all the settings etc. If you want to keep your 9254 and save some $$ then buy the Spartan!

The 401/9254 will hold fast backwards flight on a raptor 90 provided it is set up correctly. Its mabey not the best but when you can tell this you probably are in the top ten heli flyers in the world. Im not and my 90 is still able to do fast backwards flight so dont underestimate the 401/9254 combination.

If it doesnt move and its meant too... use WD 40. If it moves and its not meant too...use duct tape!

The 401/9254 is a great combination, BUT, once you have flown the 611 set you will NEVER go back to a 401. The piros are under perfect control under all circumstances and it stops instantly wherever you want it. The tail is locked in solid for all maneuvers. Quite awesome to see and feel!

Why don't you go with 611 and BL251?
Great combo.

I would say with very fast backwards flight your main issues are going to be with tail transmission and tail blades. A good gyro is more important with piro stuff. I have had issues and sorted them myself using this philosophy

Basically, if the tail hasn’t got the power, a good transmission via good belt tension or better still a torque tube and a good set of blades, it will not hold regardless of your gyro.

Without a good gyro you will never get good smooth piro rate

I would also say a 401 is a very good gyro and didn’t hold me back one bit. I now have a 611 because I found one at the right price.

I have flown very very fast backwards flight with both and have not had any problems with either.
