Like many of you I got tired of replacing the tail blade grip bearings after as little as 10 flights. Double stacking the bearings helped a little but only doubled the cost of replacement.
After much research I found a 2x6x3mm thrust bearing for the tail. It seems it was for a Tamiya RC car but it fits perfectly. After it is installed the grips are solid as a rock and the bearing should last longer while being more precise.
I am not advertising this for sale but I am willing to post my parts sources if anyone is interested.

usually the thrust bearing goes on the outside closest to the bolt head. you want to thrust load transferred through the outer race of the main bearing to the thrust washers then the thrust washers transfer to the bolt head.

in the above method the blade grip forces are transferred to the inner race and the outer race just floats. If the bolt is fastened to the hub via the inner race and the outer race is passing the force to the thrust bearing you still have a bearing tryin to pull itself apart. Or if the inner race floats the screw can be over tightened putting stress on the bearing. I tried the bearing on the inside and the thrust on the outside but without selective shims the forces were still destroying the bearing.
The outermost thrust washer is .2 mm smaller in diameter than the innermost so it can rotate freely. The copper shim then transfers the forces to the inner race which transfers them to the bolt head.

Makes sense, the way you discribe it, I need to check mine and see if it's different than yours.....I guess as long as the thrust is being transmitted all on the inner race to the bolt....it's OK. So the bottom biggest washer is what the blade holder actually pushes against?

I had one "blow" apart just as I was ready to land...made me get my thrust bearings....and I even had the bearings doubled up when it happenend.

Yes the bottom washer takes the force of the grip. The outer thrust washer has been turned down to 5.8mm so it will not turn with the grip. The bolt, inner race, little brass shim, and the outermost thrust washer can stay stationary while the grip and the inner 6mm thrust waher and the thrust bearing can turn with the pitch changes. I have never had one come apart, I always caught them with preflight. I was puzzled when the bearings were still failing with the thrust bearing on the outside.
