Hey,
I just thought I would share an amusing experiance....
Still running rich with a new engine, decided to shoot off an auto, was comming in a little fast with a little less headspeed than I was happy with, flicked out of throttle hold, engine reved up but no power went to the main blades...

Managed to put it down from a 10 ft flair haha...

Found the engine was running backwards and the sod was way out in the middle of a muddy field....
Flicked in and out of throttle hold, problem solved hahaa

Sods law heh.

I am absolutely amazed that an engine that is running can suddenly go in reverse. I know you can start them in reverse but not get them to change directions while they are still going!
Anyone else had this happen?

If the engine "coughed" during idle it can reverse direction if the low end is slightly on the rich setting.

could this be anything to do with *pre-ignition* causing the engine to not fully compress and just carry on backwards...
thats how i see it in my mind heh....

i will admit, i'v never come across an engine that would run backwards very happily, many will happily idle backwards but when you start revving up they just dont go very far... somewhat like when your running exceptionally rich...

Many times over the years I have had airplane engines that are tuned perfectly start backwards, then a quick blip of the throttle will turn them around. Even when they were running backwards you could rev them up pretty good. I have not had that happen with a heli though, and I hope it never does. Good job on that auto

Hope nothing else was damaged but the sod. I had a Raven that would start backwards a lot. it looked kinda freaky havint the trailing edge end up leading.

I had it happen in flight with my Raptor 50 with OS 50 Hyper installed, it was a cold day, the mixture was set rich as it was still running in and the engine coughed in flight then fell out of the sky, ended up an enforced auto, the engine was still running when it was on the ground. I killed it and carried back to the pits thinking the clutch had failed so stripped it out - and nothing wrong. The only answer was that the engine was running backwards. Since this time I've seen a few Hypers start backwards on the ground in the same conditions, cold weather and rich mixture settings.

My Hyper started forward (could rev a bit and feel the clutch begin to catch), then still running was fiddling with settings and tried to rev a bit, and no grab- lot more RPM, still not driving the main rotor, and everything just seemed wierd. I sat there for several moments, wondering what had just broken or what was up, when someone suggested it was running backwards. Shut down and restarted, no problems. Hmm!

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

my hyper 50 has started backward probly 25 times or more
and somtimes been going forward at not to low of a idle then switched to reverse
that has happened over 10 times
i tend to run a pretty rich low end setting and
using a
a-5, a-3, or os-8

i did read that differant heat range glow plugs change motor timing
so if it made it closer to top dead center timing it could flop back to reverse running

and heres a funny thing when it would start backward i would lower down the idle a bit,, blip the throttle up and down every couple seconds and boom it would flip back to forward direction

125 flight on my 600n 3 differant os hyper 50"s in and out of there over those flight and they have all ran backwards at one point

the ground always wins! ..my heli can beat up your heli
