So I learned a new Ebay Tactic thats been working. And it uses the Nigerians. 1st find a nice item for a couple hundred dollars you want. Make sure its a 7 day auction so the nigerians can plan for it. Then just wait and 30 seconds before it closes and goes up to $5700 for a car stereo, send an email to the seller saying your local and want the item for what ever you want to pay. 99% of the time he's tired of dealing with ebay and needs money and will accept your offer. Just a heads up, gotta change with the times.

I won't even play with ebay any more, damned scammers. Craigslist is just as bad. I don't understand what the point is behind asking someone to close the auction early, been out of it but most of the nigerian scams I have seen always want to send a 3rd party check and throw in some nonsense about paying the shipper. Then they want you to Wunion the "difference" back to them. They are so stupid...

Who accepts a 3rd party check for 2500.00 on an item that only costs 100 bucks.

I've seen a few scams from the New Republic of Benin lately....I can't believe they actually have internet access there.

You don't ask them to end the auction early. Heres the deal. The last 4 auctions on feebay I bid on were nailed by nigerians. Running a $600 computer up too $3000. This ruins the auction. Heres what I have been doing in steps.

1. Locate an item locally on ebay. Use an zip code search.

2. Wait till the auction is near ending and make a lowball offer so the email goes through offering your price and local pick up. If you wait till the auctions over ebay won't let you email the seller. But usually the nigerians hit a couple minutes before the auction so you have plenty of time.

3. The auction ends and is ruined. Seller reads your email and thinks about wasting the last week on ebay and accepts your offer realizing they get there ebay fee's too.

I've never seen an auction ruined by a scammer. I must be lucky.

I haven't had one ruined by a scammer either though I don't doubt it happens.

Max...

I see your point clearly now, makes sense because I would do the same thing probably.

I will try and sell something here or there on craigslist, heres what I do with scammers.

Lead them on, they are easy to spot so you know when to screw with em. Play it out like their plan is acceptable and let them send you the check. Delay them for a week or so, they will give you info to send them the difference via western union. Tell the scammer you sent money, he will ask for the western union MTCN and something else. Just make it up, the MTCN number is a 10 digit number (google it for format of the number). Sometimes the scammer will drive down to the local western union and try to collect the cash (that you never sent).

He won't get it and will look like a fool doing it, then he will email you telling you there is a problem with the number. You reply with "i checked western union online and it doesn't show up online, but I called WU and they told me the system updates every 6 hours" but they have your money and you can pick it up at your local WU location. Scammer will go back and look like an idiot a second time.

Next email he writes you, ask him "how do you like it?"

I usually forward all the info I get from these guys to the FBI's internet crime division. I don't know exactly how they work it but they do have contacts here in the US as one of the third party checks I got recently came from a James Gogan, boulder city CO, (that was on the fedex overnight letter dropped on my doorstep as the shipping address) but the scammer was definitely in benin.

spork thats classic- i toss mine out but now i see its better to post pics of them.
i sold 2 bikes on ebay bought by scammers.
got the check and for giggles i deposited 2 of them into my bank account - didn't remove the money just put 1 for 12k and another for 9k (for a $900 motorcycle) in the bank.
well now i got a call to come down to the bank and when i got there i was interrogated, i ended up walking out telling them that if i was trying to steal the money i would have already removed it from my account you dumb asses go after the check writer. i then switched banks

only you have the power to make no difference!

There's sort of a crazy point of law involved. When you sign a check, it's yours. If you try to use it, you are the scammer and you're the one they'll go after. If you're just depositing it in your own acct there's really no damage done, so they'll just interrogate you etc.

Probably the only way you'd end up in real trouble is if they could prove you knew it was fake and tried in earnest to cash it. But you could end up paying bounced check fees and such.

On the first one I called the bank it was written on to confirm it was fake. After that I just collected them. I also have a pile of fake postal money orders.

What do you do when you get the scammers calling you? I get them calling me once in a while or so telling me that I have won the lottery (The other day a guy called from Bank of America / Publishers Clearing House so I asked him when Ed McMann would be comming by). I am to the point now where I have fun messing around with them but they are starting to really annoy me... Any good ideas on funny things to do to them when they call or something that I can do to get them to quit calling all together?

I just say "hold on for one second", then I put the phone down for 5 to 10 minutes. I come back and ask another question like "what's the introductory rate?" and then I say "that sounds great, hold on one second" and give them another 5 to 10 minute timeout. With one guy I ate dinner and still kept him waiting.

Good ideas guys. I really like the make them wait approach. I have a lot of unused cell minutes that I can use for that... I am sure a potiental scammer would love to hear me type on a keyboard for 10 minutes at a time... I wonder if they are fronting the LD bill from Nigeria or wherever they are???

I also find Sporks cashier check collection amusing. It would be funny dragging those guys along for weeks at a time making them think that they were going to get money after sending the fake MO. Maybe if I was lucky they would bank on getting money from me and start spending it before it got to them causing themselves a finacial hardship (which I am pretty sure they are already in)...

Anyway I will try the eternal hold method for now. Sounds easy enough

The other fun thing to do with scammers is to tell them you have a pending deal, but you'll sell it to them if they can get you a cashier's check by tomorrow.

I'd guess it costs $20 to overnight a fake check from Nigeria.
