as the old saying goes
I, maybe like you reading this was very motivated to fly, build rc helis.
Believe me i read tons. thought i was ready to plunge, but no.
JUST BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUY, either from a shop or worse online, let alone second hand!
My advise, take it or leave it, find a GOOD local shop.Keep all your sales tickets, you may need them.
check out what you bought, at the shop, quick as to not let the short warranty expire.Do you trust what they tell, sell, you, interesting this rhymes?
to bad, there is alot of cheap junk out there.
if you have alot of money maybe you do not care,or you care less for sure, but those who by choice have less really need to pay careful attention!and those who have no choice, do something else!!!

If you check dwb's location you will note that he lives in Orsières which is a municipality in the district of Entremont in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

His primary language is French. Try to look beyond what is written to understand what he is saying. It appears that he feels that he purchased something that didn't meet his expectations or was misrepresented by the company or salesperson. He is trying to caution us to be careful about how we spend our hard earned money.

I know that I have spend enough money on equipment that didn't perform as highlighted in the advertisement.

Caveat emptor is Latin for "Let the buyer beware".

I've spent a lot of money the past 8 months on rc. All heli junk (one plank), and not one real complaint about an online store. Then again, I search any place I am going to buy from and only use reputable dealers.

Seems that the ones who get burned are the ones who want to save a buck and buy a walkera from some china ebay seller.

Good points but if I went local, as in the LHS, I would have quit a long time ago or spent a whole lot more in gas than I do for shipping.

Redvtr, online shopping is great for sum and id have to say really depends on th LHS you have. I am lucky enuff to have 2 good LHS near me. Then there is the generic hobby shop. I wont mention a name. They sell helis but have no one there that could even try to fly one.
Most of their employees are teenagers, and are car guys. NO HELP THERE.
I once went in there with my 60 needing some hardware, talk about the deer in the headlight look.

Snobdrs,

I would never intentionally tell someone to not visit the lhs in favor of the net. There are a few great stores that I have been too around atlanta, but on the whole most of them are very lackluster.

If you have a good local store, and they aren't trying to make a killing on markup, its a good bet. I just make sure to point out that online stores are excellent options, but you have to have some common sense about it.

For me, the closest store that I consider to be decent is Atlanta hobby, and thats about a 2 hour drive (even though I only live about 40 miles away) because of the horrible traffic here. The rest is your usual smattering of Hobby Towns with a local guy thrown in here and there that focuses on cars and pinewood derbys.

Definitely nice to be able to walk in and pick up a pack of screws or battery terminals when you need them. The internet is good if you put some effort in and use a reputable store.

if I can save more than 30% of money, then I will go online shopping. The local hobby shop markup the price too much

From my experience so far, most lhs's aren't real heli friendly. If you need something like deans connectors, shrink tubing, screws etc., then Local is easy enough. Anything actually heli specific is usually online, especially for the bigger heli's.

Im in kinda the same boat as dwb but my experience has been different. Helis are expensive and if not for forums like this one I would not be able to afford this hobby. I have had only positive experience here, been helped out with my questions, gotten some good deals etc. I always check the feedback of the person I buy from, if they dont have any or if what they have is poor then I dont buy, even if it is a great deal. Im sorry for dwb but if you are careful I think that you can do very well online with heli parts. Thanks to RR.

Another day...

If you like to support the local economy, then buy from lhs. If you like to support yourself, buy online and save $$$ from the pocket.

Many good points but some people are unlucky or just don't research or check out where or whom they are buying items from. Like the saying goes "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me I have over 4 pages of Feedback dealings on RR and lots more all over the internet with very little problems. Like farfromhomein said
"I always check the feedback of the person I buy from, if they dont have any or if what they have is poor then I dont buy, even if it is a great deal."
Do you due diligence and 99% of the time the purchase will go smooth.

Cheers
