I don't have any YS helicopter engine experience but I do have a lot of time on a YS 91, 120 and 140 pattern plank engines. My experience with those engines is this. Either you have a good one or you don't. It can be a bad sleeve and ring and once replaced the engine is a winner. The ones I had that ran were awesome. The others were a pain in the neck. I don't know if the same applies to their heli version but my guess is that it would.

Best of luck to you with yours.

Yup... Tried every needle setting, tried the one way valve with no spring and tried the valve from My YS91SR. Nothing has helped this engine... it's just plain C#@p! I put one of my OS 50 Hypers back in today, flew it and I can't remember why I wanted to waste money on this YS50. Tons of power and she is flying right agian. Since I have the YS out I did check the internals. The piston, ring and sleave have virtually no wear... looks brand new. However the compression is only about half of what my OS is. I now think the problem is a bad ring sleave seal. I will contact YS and see if this is a known issue before throwing this engine in the trash. I will be sure to let everyone know what if anything they have to say.

If you give up on it, drop me a PM . . . I have yet to find a YS anything that didn't blow my OS motors out of the water in perfomance, consistency, and ease of tuning . . . If it really is that new, it should be a pretty simple matter to figure out what's up and correct it . . .

Mine didn't had any compression at the beginning... yet it runs like clockwork and much smoother than my OS. Don't ask me why this is but my YS could be turned by hand when it was new. I can say the opposite of the OS that I could barely turn at all when it was NIB.

If it is the ring and sleeve then YS should replace both under warranty with little to no hassle. At least they would in the past but that has been quite a few years ago. The only problem is you are out an engine until they get it back to you.

I have run the Enya 3 and OS8 plugs.

Only problem will be convencing them that the ring/sleave has a problem. They look good but there is low compression. I need to get a compression guage to actuall have some numbers I guess.

What headspeed are you guys running? I've found the YS50 likes a lower speed than the OS50. In my 600N I run 2000HS (17000 motor rpm) with +-14 pitch, Radix blades, and Hatori pipe. It doesn't bog on a full power climbout. With Vs I couldn't pull more than +-13.

I've run 2150 and 2000 headspeed and it was even worse at the lower headspeed. Trying to do fast full pitch tic-tocs will kill this engine regardless of what I have tried. 1.5 + 3 clicks was the best it has ever done and that was far short of my OS.

I just got off the phone with YS and they are sending me a new ring to try out. I should have this in by next weekend and I will let you know how it goes. If this doesn't work they are going to have me send them the engine. Hopefully I will have my YS50ST to go with the YS91SR after all.
