I have heard that a gyro sensitivity value of under 50 percent is not a heading hold value, both my 450 and 500 are set at 45 percent and both fly well. I would like to understand why they are set so low to keep the tail from twitching or should I leave well enough alone. I use a Spektrum rx and tx.

It depends on what setting in your radio you are using to set your gain. If your at 45 on your radio Im guessing you are using either the Gear Channel or AUX2 channel ATVs.

GYRO SENS MENU with values from 0% to 100%
For example in this image if you selected 0% on the SENS MENU, you would be in RATE MODE at 100% gain. If you chose 100% on the SENS MENU you would be in HEAD HOLD MODE at 100% gain. If you set the value anywhere from 40% to 60% you would be in the RED ZONE, which futaba does not recommend.

GEAR CHANNEL ATV with values from -100% to 100%
Note that on the DX7 the gear switch at postion zero uses the PLUS value in the ATV menu and position 1 uses the MINUS value in the menu.
For example with your GEAR SWITCH in the zero position you can change the ATV + value. At its default +100, you would be in HEAD HOLD MODE at 100% gain. Turning that value down to +60 would be HEAD HOLD MODE at 60% gain. Switch to position 1 and you can now change the ATV - value. At its default -100% you would be in RATE MODE at 100% gain. If you set the plus side anywhere from 0% to +10, or the minus side anywhere from 0% to -10% you would be in the red zone, which futaba does not recommend.

Edit. widowmaker posted when I was typing but here it goes!

it depends on what kind of radio you are using, if it's a Futaba(please correct me if I'm wrong,as I do not fly, neither owned a Futaba) the gain should be the same on the radio than the heli, in other words, if you are in AVCS aka heading hold on the radio, with a gain of 45, you'll have a true 45 on the gyro on AVCS, and vice versa if you are in Rate mode.

But if it's another brand things change quite a bit, on my 9303, being the gear channel the gain, to achieve the gains I have on positon 1 rate mode and in position 2 AVCS, in order to do that I have to play with the ATV's, to achieve a 50% on the gyro I have to dial 75 on the travel of the gear channel, and it's quite simple to understand,

Imagine the travel of the servo being 0 to 100, 0 to 50 would be rate mode, so 25 would be 50% on rate mode, and 50 to 100 would be AVCS, that's why I have to dial 75 to be on 50% in the gyro.
I tried my best to explain it as simple it could be, may be someone could jump and clarify it more easily

PS I have a Gyro Sens menu on the 9303, but I couldn't make it work that way, on my 600N I have the gain of the 502 on the Gyro Sens menu but in the 450 I can't make it work with the 401, only God knows why!

Fantastic illustration widowmaker, My earlier beliefs were that heading hold wasn't obtained until you reach 50 percent on position 0. But your illustration shows that it actually starts at +0 in position 0 and that puts me well into the heading hold zone being that I have mine at +45 gear channel position 0. Thanks for clearing that up, I can now understand the sensitivity setup process.
