ok so are you guys all 2s or 3s on align light string converter? reason i ask is i just got k&b tail blades with uv light and it works ok on 7.4 but was designed to be on 12v. light from my 3s is insanely bright!!.
so i'd like to run 3s (roughly 12v) to all my lights. will it blow out the align converter?

only you have the power to make no difference!

Do not run the 3s on the Align driver. You will literally burn it out.
I tried an 800mah 3s lipo and the driver got super hot and shortly thereafter did not work ever again.

Use the 2s 800mah lipo pack for the Align driver (originally for the Blade CX heli) and you'll get about 1hr flight time.

As for the K&B UV LED light, tie that directly in to your ESC battery leads so it gets the voltage it needs.

I've found the glow wire to be decently bright (two 1.5 meter wires) when the driver is plugged into the receiver, or BEC. It works very well, and saves weight on the 450 size heli. But on my nitro, I will be running a 2s 800mah lipo pack with two drivers and five 1.5 meter wires.

Could I use something like the align 5.1 stepdown to regulate the voltage down to 5v using a 3S pack?

i wouldn't chance it i had them burn out in flight on me.
good news is that the light strings will run on 9v (3s) if you get a converter that can handle 3s. the align converter is cheap and easy to find but there are some better ones out there.

I ran a set of Align light strings on 3S for 40+ flights

I took them off a while ago, but they still worked the last time I plugged them all in.

I made up an adapter and just ran them using the balance tap from my flight pack.

You can also just use 2 cells from the balance tap, but it throws the packs slightly out of balance. I tried it that way for 2 flights, but I liked the brighter strings when I ran 3S so I switched back. I also didn't like throwing my packs out of balance every flight

I ran my align glow driver straight off my 3S flight packs all last year without any issue or extra heat. Really didnt have an issue with it at all..

With my luck, I ordered an align driver but it didn't work. Got another one coming in in a few days while this one goes back to align for an exchange.

I just tried using a 3S setup for the align driver. After 2 mins or so, the driver starts to get hot. Guess I a will be using the 2S setup.

A rock solid 12V inverter can be found below - I use them on my 600 night ship. Two will power all the wire for 600 size heli. One for canopy and one for the frame. Also, this has been my favorite spot for glow wire and glow sticks - I use 2.2mm el wire. Be sure to checkout the LEDs too. Enjoy
