Backwards compatible but not forward compatible

You can use a DSM2 TX with any of the DSM and DSM2 RXs but you can only use DSM RXs with DSM TXs (DX6)

For reasons I don't know using DSM RXs will consume more power from TXs causing them to require charging sooner/more frequently

This part taken by itself can be misleading. Let me try to rephrase:

A DSM2 Tx can support both DSM2 and DSM receivers. A DSM Tx can only support DSM receivers.

One caveat, the modules do NOT work with DSM. Only the native DSM2 Txes. It has to do with knowning which model is selected.

When you bind the Tx listens for a DSM2 Rx, which sends out a signal during th ebind process. If no signal is heard the Tx defaults to DSM and just sends out the bind info. So the Tx has to know for each model if it is a DSM or DSM2 Rx on the other end. And the module have no way of knowing.

After pinecone's post I don't know but I believe you'd be better off with AR6100s in any case

No you can't. The manual for the module clearly states this.
Note: The Module system is not compatible with the AR6000 first generation DSM® receivers.
