Porque, no servirá una cerca alta? Podemos cerrar nuestra frontera.

Look guys, all this arguing is for nothing...the powers-that-be have set things up to be the way they are. NAFTA has created a boon for corporations but has caused a mass emigration out of Mexico and into the US. US jobs are being exported elsewhere. This is all by design, the elite want to maintain an exploitable labor pool. The best way to keep people exploitable is to keep them illegal. The best way to keep them illegal is to get people riled up about immigrants. It's easy to rile up Americans about immigration because we've got a racist streak in us a mile deep.

I see both sides of the argument, Americans want to mantain their culture, and outsiders see us as self-centered ignorants who never travel beyond our borders but who like to send soldiers out to conquer foreign lands.

There are valid points on both side but we're arguing with the wrong people. The elite have set things up in their favor. The super rich in America work with the super rich in Mexico to keep the status quo. The last thing the American elite want is a country like Mexico (with so many natural resources) to have a booming economy with plenty of employment. The first thing a prosperous neighbor does is to build up their military, and we don't want that next door. Also our cheap labor pool would dry up and we'd have to pick our own lettuce. Americans have been watching too many Lexus and DeBeers commercials to have to lower themselves to pick their own food.

What we need is some type of worker program where every person who comes across is accounted for...but that will never happen because Repubs are against giving immigrants rights and a decent wage....

Apparently, Juan McCain's plan to stop illegal immigration is to recognize that we have a border issue
As president, I will secure the border. I will restore the trust Americans should have in the basic competency of their government. A secure border is an essential element of our national security. Tight border security includes not just the entry and exit of people, but also the effective screening of cargo at our ports and other points of entry.

But a secure border will contribute to addressing our immigration problem most effectively if we also:

* Recognize the importance of building strong allies in Mexico and Latin America who reject the siren call of authoritarians like Hugo Chavez, support freedom and democracy, and seek strong domestic economies with abundant economic opportunities for their citizens.

* Recognize the importance of pro-growth policies -- keeping government spending in check, holding down taxes, and cutting unnecessary regulatory burdens -- so American businesses can hire and pay the best.

* Recognize the importance of a flexible labor market to keep employers in business and our economy on top. It should provide skilled Americans and immigrants with opportunity. Our education system should ensure skills for our younger workers, and our retraining and assistance programs for displaced workers must be modernized so they can pursue those opportunities

* Recognize the importance of assimilation of our immigrant population, which includes learning English, American history and civics, and respecting the values of a democratic society.

* Recognize that America will always be that "shining city upon a hill," a beacon of hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life built on hard work and optimism.

Border security and our failed immigration system are more examples of an ailing Washington culture in need of reform to regain the trust of Americans. In too many areas -- from immigration and pork barrel spending to Social Security, health care, energy security and tax relief -- business-as-usual politics prevents addressing the important challenges facing our nation.
Dammit conservatives! Did you really have to stay home on Tuesday!!

After reading Hillary Clinton's "plans" on her web site, and reading John McCain's "plans", the only thing they disagree on is what to do in Iraq. Other than that, their rhetoric is virtually the same!

Lou, How are the American farmers the "elite"? Wasn't it the agricultural work what started the immigration in the 50's-60's? And about a prosperous neighbor, don't we get along with Canada at least pretty well? I mean, are we worried that Canada is going to invade? What about cheap labor? There would be plenty of Hondurans, El Salvadorians, and Guatemalans able to fill the space of newly affluent Mexican nation. And what about the European socialist countries? Do they not import their own cheap labor? The Germans are having problems with their Turkish population, and Paris was almost burned to the ground. I guess what I am saying is we are not the only "civilized" country to get someone to cut our grass.
