I was a little bummed a few years ago when I asked one of my flying buddies who had just gotten a 14MZ the question "Where does the toast and coffee come out?"

I fly a 12Z because it has so much to offer in programming, setup and features. I'm sure the 12X falls in a similar category. You never hear me cry about a feature I don't have available, splitting channels, battery whoas. These higher end radios pay you back every time you use them in pleasure alone.

Don't go by what the Szabos or any other sponsored pilots use. They are paid to use those products.

to buy a radio for that type of money is just plain foolish
There are plenty of people who have worked very hard to afford the kinds of things they want in life. I don't think that's very foolish at all. Living beyond your means is foolish, but I don't see what the problem is with people spending their money the way they want.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of one's labors. We all spend dough recklessly from time to time, often on this hobby, and we certainly can't take it with us as John points out.

But in the back of my mind when I ponder these $2000 tx's is that they're probably manufacturing each copy for a couple hundred bucks maximum -- probably closer to $100. Even when considering the R&D bucks they spend to bring 'em to market, they still seem way over-priced for what they do.

I imagine the motivation which sells $1500-2000 tx's is most often the jewelry (bling) factor rather than the features. Quite frankly I've gotta chuckle (quietly) sometimes when observing the mindsets of some of the guys who buy 'em.

When there's something I wanna do with an RC model that I can't do with the eight channels and considerable features my current tx has, I'll look around for another. I've got a feeling it's gonna be a long time though.

I have to agree with you Gimbalfan....When you compare the price to what it does it is overpriced but like you said, a diamond is just a rock thats been in the ground for hundreds of years but its the value that we americans put on it that drives the cost of them. And the same goes with JR and Futaba the only reason why they charge that much is because they know we will pay that much for those transmitters.

Yes we do.

I am one of those who likes to have the best of the best, and yes, I do have a 14MZ....though I did buy mine used through this forum.

It is strictly because its a freakin' sweet radio, though I know I could get by on a DX7, but when I can program a heli start to finish in 20 minutes, I like that convenience and have gotten used to it. I had a 12Z, sold it and after having the touch screen convenience, even it was a drag when I was programming another one recently.

I don't make a ton of money, I don't have many other hobbies, so what extra money I do have, I buy the best of the best.

YMMV

Yes Paul you are correct, convenience is definately something to pay extra for. Some of us will save, borrow, buy & sell until we reach our Holy Grail It will be interesting to see how many of these will up for sale once they are out for a few months.

Bottom line is get whatever you enjoy the most. If someone says you spent too much $$$$, tell them to mind their own business. Most of the folks here work hard for their money and they have every right to enjoy it as they see fit. Its pretty hard to justify what we "need" since in all perspective this is just a hobby.

hmm what if use two 7ch radios...
2 X 7ch is 14ch.
So I assume you would need a set of series connectors for your TX, but where would one get something like that??

Im gonna invent it 14S Series TX

I specifically went to see the radio back at the ihobby show. I have had the 8103, 9303 and now fly the DX7 for the 2.4. It was nice but I don't know if it was $1500 nice. It wasn’t as shinny and “bling-ing” as I thought it would be. It was cool…It was a TX. I guess I expected to be more wowed…maybe because I “could” buy it if I wanted to takes the “wow” and “want” factor out. As a kid I always wondered how someone could afford such “radios” like the 10X. I am disappointed to find it is not update-able via the internet…why not? What a great feature even if you needed it just once in the life of the TX. The backlit screen was pretty.

So is it worth $1500?? Are 3 more channels and some more mixings (and really 99% of us will never use) and a back lit screen worth $870 more than the 9303? Man that is a lot more than the 9303! The futaba 12 FGH can be had for $500 less at ready heli right now, under $1000.

I think if they priced it around $1199 they would have gotten a lot more takers, they could have made it up in volume…at $1500, it is really gonna make you think twice when you can get the 9303 and really have more radio then you will ever need. Too bad the 9303 does not have the backlit screen.

Is it worth it? I don’t know, is a brushless servo worth $139.00 when we used standard servos back in the day probably for the same application Sure, hey you only live once; it'll fit the cool-wow-newest factor. As long as you are not putting off your morgage to buy the radio

IF this radio gets popular we will no doubt continue to hear the moans about the hobby getting dearer and dearer.
It's a very high price to pay for a piece of kit..but..will it make the "pilot" a better flier?

Synodontis, I guess I shouldnt have knocked it until I rocked it, but I figured the touchscreen as sacred and was appalled by this transgression....

fwiw I had one touchscreen failure on a 10sx2 after 1100 hours, and I was flying in rain for awhile when it happened.

That wasnt a fault of the equipment.

my 2 10x radios I bought since because of that 10sx2 have a few hundred hours on them and the screens havent given me any troubles.

Sucks that some of the big dogs had screen problems, that is my favorite feature of the JR radios.

I look forward to getting my hands on a 12x anyways, would like to see what the extra features can do.

---

As for the cost complaint and logic that "I'll never use all the features", thats not really true because these kind of radios are built to last and by then you will have grown into the features if you still 'have the bug', so they really are good purchases in the long run.

Some of us fly more than just a Piccolo. Some of us have a lot of money invested in some really nice machines. We are talking literally thousands if not tens of thousands.

$1500 isn't ridiculous at all for a top of the line radio to operate these machines. It's the piece of equipment that does all of your interfacing with your models. If you want a really nice one and you can afford it, go for it or you can get by with a minimal radio like the DX7

Just like audio and video equipment. We don't need it. We can get by with a clock radio. Some people pay many thousands for high end equipment. Resale on high end RC radio equipment seems to be MUCH better than high end audio equipment. To say it's foolish to own high end audio/video equipment or high end anything is simply casting stones or jealousy. Everybody has their personal limits on what they consider too much.
