I haven't read all the post, but,it might not be YOUR computer,it could be the other computers slowing things down?

true, I have heard that it defaults to the slowest person online. So you may be correct there

My friend is thinking about buying a RC-simulator with the option to fly online. Is it really a fact that phoenix slows down in multiplayer depending on the latency of the other´s connection ?

In G3 there are two things happening:
1.
more planes lead to slower framerate but from my observations this only starts getting bad when more than 6 people are online tested with a low-end machine, with a better computer it stays smooth with 10+ people flying.

2. A bad latency of other pilots lets these guys jump over the sky, sometimes several meters if connection is really bad ( dial up ?)
My own framerate, the movements of my plane and the smoothness of changing view directions stays very good even with this bad connection ( of the other pilots) .

So after all in G3 even a dial-up guy can´t ruin your session.
Is this the same in phoenix ?

On Phoenix you can see who has a bad connection but my heli still remains smooth. You have some that fly around smooth, like normal play, then others that jump across the sky.

I think you'll find the same thing Guest_jo - this is pretty standard in all online applications, and I haven't experienced a slow player slowing others down.

I would say that the only time you would see the behaviour mentioned above is when the server itself is experiencing lag.

Agreed.
The internet involves a complex number of nodes varying in performance according to local demands. It's only as good as the weakest link with respect to one's own net link path.

The getting kick out issue is in part due to the fact that Phoenix multiplayer doesn’t yet support letting someone else take over hosting when the host quits. There is no separate message when this happens it just says you have been kicked.
It’s kinda a tricky thing to do well as it causes problems in G3 when the next machine is behind a router set so it can’t host etc. The best thing would be if Phoenix could analyse everyone in the sessions PC & internet connection & make the fastest the host dynamically changing as the situation changes.

Phoenix seem to be expending more development effort & are more contactable than other sims. So I am sure things will get better.

Tim.

I personally would like to see phoenix host online sessions and provide a chat room where people could hook up. Maybe they could even do a little advertising to pay for the server. This would certainly promote their product.

If we as a group start asking phoenix they might do it
If you think it is a good idea E-mail them !
