Just wondering if anyone is happy with the online play on Phoenix?
I have a fast internet connection (8mbs), a new quad core pc and 4g of Kingston ram, 8800 Nvidia card etc etc all new.
But to say that the experience was EXTREMELY laggy is an understatement! Very jerky looking, a real shame as I was looking forward to a virtual flying field
What are your experiences with it?
Also, if more than 2 people were flying, waste of time trying, everything would just freeze....

Depends on the connection speed of the host and your connection to that host. Im 10mbs and have been on some servers that it was a bit laggy and some like silk.

Regardless of server there is always a short pause when someone pops back in after a crash.

Yup, my buddies and my session runs really smooth, Widowmaker came to visit too, so he can attest. Hiccups here and there and when people pop in after a crash or when they show up. Other than that, I like it.

I've just started with it online as well. The ones I have played in (saw you the other day WJackson) have been hit or miss.

I've done a few sessions with 2-3 people and had it be great but get 8 in there and it gets laggy. Too frequently I get connection errors though. I know my settings are good, didn't work at all for me until I went through the router setup and opened ports 9000 - 9005 and set the firewall to allow phoenix.

i am a big fan of the online sim flying. I have flown many times with bill, Widowmaker and many others. Their hosts are really smooth.

when i host i can handle about 3 members but after that it' chopps really bad. sometimes 4 is ok. but this has to do with who joins the sessions. sometimes one guy will come in with a really low ping and it screws up the session even locks the game up.

what i do b4 going online is drop all my settings to low and uncheck everything.

vertviper and http://www.DelawareHeli.com(WJackson) have really good hosts.

just keep searching for a good host.

Personally I prefer 4 to 5 pilots max anyway. Even if 8 flying ran smooth it would just be to crowded.

Heck, sometimes its still crowded with 4 flying. Like Blt4ice mentioned, it would be cool if we could have different "flight stations". Ya know gorn since your are "down under" try getting some locals to throw up a session and see how that is. I had a session with Eklund (he was host) whos in the UK, and our pings were still quite good, despite the big pond inbetween us, but nowhere near what a locals ping would be.

Looking at your specs, unless there is an issue with your system, you should not have to lower any settings. I run with everything high 1680x1050x60hz with VSYNC enabled, which limits your framerate to your refresh rate, I never drop below 60. If I disable vsync it varies from 170 fps to well over 200.

If you dont have vsync enabled try enabling it.

I run everything high as well but disable antialiasing, that will drop the fps on my system

The last time I recieved a response from Phoenix they said there was a new patch coming soon this month hopefully.
I would like to see one where you can change your start position.
It is very hard for a float plane to take off on land !

I also like the idea of having different pilot positions instead of standing on top of each other, there should be pilot stations.

Isnt the main problem of the different pilot positions that the scene is a pano? So the start position is going to be the position of the camera when the pano was taken. I think if your position is moved the pano effect would be jacked up.

I usually end up being kicked off sessions (that's if I can get on in the 1st place) when the ping is bad - this is usual, even if i'm on a local session in the UK.
BTW, WJackson, Eklund is in Sweden. I've often had fairly reasonable hookups with him and Jonta

Thats the only thing I liked about FS-One... they had the 3D fields so you could actually move.. kind of like walking, up and down the flight line or across the field to a building off in the distance.. which I did once and flew my electric airplane inside it

That was the only thing I really liked though. The helis sucked bad.

Dont know if I have Vsync enabled, will check and try it out.
I know that Australia to international web connections are really bottlenecked due to our crap telecommunications system.
I think we only have 4 major internet traffic pipelines for international use. So my understanding is, that even though I have a genuine 8mbs speed, at peak periods and using international web sites, the pipelines get bottlenecked, and so the speed diminishes.
