Our local Asda has a bank of these things.

To me they are a sad symbol of our times. So sad, that we need to avoid personal contact, to put a couple of extra pounds in a fat cat's pocket.

They never work for me anyway. I always get a warning 'BEEP!, you have done it wrong! wait for the human to come and rescue you.'

I am sure that I lose a couple of hours from my lifetime due to stress each time.

I refuse to use them. What's next? Me re-stocking the shelf when I buy something?

They install these self serve systems in stores and banks to get back at those who mock the lowly cashiers and clerks and give them a hard time for not knowing how to count back your change.

I like them! While everyone else is avoiding them there's little or no queue so they're faster. I also don't feel so guilty unloading all my loose change into the coin counter

I like them when they work well. Other day at home depot it was a PITA. Needed cashier override to buy spray paint. Then it had a weight error from snow shovel. Then it did not like the barcode from a box of lights I was buying. Every single item had some sort of error.

I get pi$$ed at Home depot because they only have the self check outs open and maybe one other line. Of course that line is always long when I am buying lumber (ever try to scan a sheet of plywood yourself?, it doesn't work!) or when I am paying with my corporate card and it requires input from a cashier. It truly is corporate laziness.

Who raised the ground since I took off?

i'll start using them when they start giving a discount for doing the job their cashier would otherwise get paid for doing.

I like em as long as they work. I also like them as long as the 5 people in front of me aren't trying to pay with cash!!@#! Ack! Get with the times! Using them in Walmart is pretty much going to add 20 minutes to your visit there. It's pathetic... Hell, Walmart is pathetic...

Dude, what are you smoking? Cash is the way to go, and its usually faster in my experience.

Know why retailers all accept plastic now, even though they have to pay fees to the card companies? People spend more when they use plastic! Spending cash hurts!

What am I smoking? No way is cash faster at any of the stores I frequent. Nor is it more accurate than a card. You introduce the human element when they are counting out your cash. Of course you need to make sure everything they scan is correct, but why introduce another point of failure. I promise checking out with a debit card is twice as fast as cash. I'm 100% certain I can pay faster at the U-Scan terminals than someone with cash. Ever seen someone try to put a trashed dollar bill in one of those??? Wow... memories of the Chicken Little movie come to mind...

Now there are some stores that have amazingly SLOWWWWW debit machines. But those are few and far between.

And the spending cash hurts statement... yup, I agree with that. If people only had cash, they would spend less. I know I do if I happen to have cash on me, which isn't very often.

No way cash is faster, just swipe the card and go.

The store doesnt lose any money when I pay with cash.
Cash doesnt have any fees that are incorporated with Credit Cards.

Until they offer a discount for cash users, I pay with Credit or Debit whenever possible.

And yeah, I hate self check outs.
It takes longer to get in and out of the store.
It slows you down even more if you're buy a rated R DVD or something..

And those electronic security devices...
I can never seem to deactivate all of them, and EVERY TIME I get stopped at the door when the alarm goes off,
SLOWING ME DOWN EVEN MORE!

It seems like there always some kind of problem with person's credit card in front of me in the check out line. In a perfect world plastic is faster.

Funny you bring this up.

I was in a HD a few days ago and there was one "live" cashier and the "self check out" There was three of us in line for the live cashier and zippo for the other. The shift manager came out, and tried to pursued us to head over to the Self check. Every body refused. He started giving us a pep-talk about the thing. Still know body budged. On the way out, he said have a "good day"
I stopped and said "want to be the highest producing HD in the area? Put out some coffee at the entrance, hire a bunch of attractive women with big boobs that can type fast and count change, then put them on the morning shift from 6 am to noon. Every contractor in the area will go out of there way to buy there stuff at your home depot"

Some body should tell the bean counters at HD HQ that NO BODY likes that thing.

I have tried it 5 time, 4 of them I had to seek assistance. That's 4 out of 5 failure rate

Done.

Funny you say that...

The equipment for the self checkout isn't free... Has to be paid for somehow. So tell me again why you should get a discount?

If I wanted to be a clerk at a walmart or home depot I would fill out an application and I would get paid for it . I will leave a cart full of crap setting in the check out lane before I use one . I can and will find a store that sells what I want and hires people to do people jobs.

I still think it's funny the amount of bitc*ing going on about a machine people are paid $8/hr to run, and so many of ya'll can't or won't use it. I use them whenever I can. Most of the time I am in and out of the store while a bunch of lemmings are standing in a single-row line, talking on their cellphones, waiting to be greeted by a cashier who would rather be talking on their own cellphone anyways.
