Nothing brings more tears of joy to my eyes than the sight of a new Hummer dealership!
Give me a big vehicle that gets 30+ mpg.

My 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins does 20mpg highway but it puts out 420hp 900tq at the rear wheels.

oh, dear, you poor, hard done by Yanks

Try, petrol (gasoline) £ 1.05 A LITRE!!!! That's over$2

Diesel is £1.09 a litre.

I have a choice, my car cost£1200 ,4 years ago..annual Vehicle excise duty (they discontinued the fraudulent term"road tax"

£180 a year, annual safety inspection £52(mandatory, gov.t regulated)

Insurance, compulsory, private sector, I pay £300 including business use.

the car's a diesel, does 45+ mpg...do own maintenance.(it's a '96 with 170 K miles up,getting tired now.

My "weekender" has the same VED (we still tend to call it "road-tax!) and same MOT (annual inspection)
has "classic car" insurance, limited to 3,000 miles a year. £ 270.

It guzzles petrol at 14 MPG. cost, less than £7,000-not losing value...do own maintenance/repairs.

Needless to say, I mainly use the Diesel, but when 4 people want to go in style, the greedy petrol as still cheaper and more cost-effective.

world demand sets the oil price, stop reckless consumption and the price will drop...ECONOMICS!!!!!

The same reason we get cheap off-peak electricity,- It's cheaper to just "throttle-down" a power-station than attempt to shut-down and restart (as well as that NOT being a daily option-strategy)...so, the otherwise "waste" electricity is sold cheap, to encourage the installation of night-storage heaters, etc.

Refineries also can't go on-off line at the flick of a switch...reduce demand to the point where storage capacity runs out and the price will CRASH.

to suggest that Americans cannot afford to swap their present greedy gas-guzzler for a high MPG alternative, is total hogwash.

As another poster observed, the fuel-savings alone will offset the payment-costs,if you REALLY have a small willy, and HAVE to display a shiny, expensive status-symbol to the passing world.

otherwise, buy a well-used, frugal cheapy for cash,-even if you can't repair it yourself, the savings on payments and depreciation will pay for all repairs and show a huge profit.

what you WANT should not be confused with your NEEDS.

More likely because it is an election year. Gas prices always fall during an election year then they ratchet right back up. In the fall of 2006 here in Mass when the election was on for governor, the prices had fallen to $1.99 per gallon by october. After the elections they rocketed back up to 2.75 a gallon within a month.
I get back to this thread hoping that umdpru could keep his foot out of his mouth for just a few days and he goes and makes another absurd statement like that!!

How in the world does local race for governor have an effect on a global product like fuel?

The one and only way that the government could have an effect on the short term price of fuel is by releasing oil from the governments reserves, thus increasing supply and lowering price.

Even if the big oil companies wanted to drop prices to get the republicans elected in your so called conspiracy they dont even have that power.

You see the large US oil companies only produce about 15% of the worlds oil supply, they in no way have the power to reduce price like that in the short term. OPEC or saudi arabia could but not the US companies...

Just becasue prices happened to go down at the time of an election doenst mean the election caused it. More likely because elections come at the end of the summer driving season but before the heating oil season so oil products demand is at its lowest in those months...

You once again prove you lack of intellect and utterly distorted views on how the world works...

Gas prices are dictated by supply and demand,,,, PERIOD....

Dood, you need to calm the hell down. What I posted is my observation here in my state. I have not noticed such a decline in price in any off election years.

It sure is funny every two years when the prices at the pumps fall in the fall of an election year coincidence or otherwise...

The bottom line here Wake is that you are refuting my personal observations. Furthermore, you are doing so having never met me and you don't know what I've seen.

The conspiracy is your connection. I never said there was a conspiracy or that any one company or person was causing the decline. I merely pointed out that I HAVE noticed a drop in prices particularly more so during election years!!

Stop being so god damned arrogant!

I bet you took all the toys in the sand box and beat up kids for their lunch money too XXXXXXX!

No you moron i am not refuting your "personal observations" I am refuting your moronic correlations.

Its like saying that the Giants won the superbowl because i was crossing my fingers, sure they won the superbowl and sure i was crossing my fingers but that does not mean that the REASON they won was because of me.

Even if i happened to be crossing my fingers EVERY time the giants won wouldnt mean that i was the reason.

It is equally absurd to think that a local election was the CAUSE of gas prices dropping by 30%... I dont doubt that you observed prices going down in that election time, i was mearly pointing once again that you dont have a clue how the world works and therefore your opionon is irrelevant other then giving me something to poke fun at...

What having met you has anything to do with the fact that you dont have a clue how the world works is well beyond me... yet every other post you keep saying "you dont know me" and "you have not met me" if i had met you in person i would still think you had the intellect of a 14 yr old..

i'm done with the personal insults and attacks so prevalent on this board.

It's a good thing I am entitled to my opinions by law. It seems certain people here would rather not allow that.

Wake, It's already stated that the oil Co's operate a rebate policy....happens here too....franchisee/licensee buys in to sell at a given price, rival station posts 0.9 p/litre lower.....
our man calls the terminal, gives his pump-readings and all remaining stock is rebated to allow a posted price which the terminal dictates....

the rub is that the site operator does not get his rebate for some time (several tanker-loads) so he's subsidising each delivery until his rebate comes around!

had a garage-filling station, and often paid more than the majors retailed at...it helped sell oil, consumables, workshop time....but serving a couple of gallons for £0.05 (ten cents) a gallon profit, gross, was not the way to millions

annual licensing, electrical and fire inspections, tank-testing (pressure) every 2 years(or fit new ones) pump calibration and maintenance...all helped wipe out the profit...oh, yes, my time....about a cent a minute! (and sometimes I'd check the oil, water, tyres free as well!

there is BIG money in petrol, the UK majors used to insist on a site doing one million UK Gallons a year, they closed anything that did less, selling the site with a covenant prohibiting it's future use as a filling-station. very few independent pumps in urban UK nowadays
and, yes, on that turnover, the site paid it's costs..the profit was from the shop sales.
