Hoot
Today at over $3 a gallon there is more oil than we know what to do with and we can buy as much as we want any time we want. So it's not oil supply, it's greed
It is still supply, but not in the way you are thinking about it.

1. It costs more to get at the oil. Companies are now looking at less productive areas to get oil. Some of the articles I posted said it costs half as much as the oil is worth to get it in some areas. Seriously, read up on shale oil drilling. Harder for the oil companies to get, the more expensive it costs them, the more they are going to charge. I have already shown that Exxon's profits were about 11% which was less that many other industry's and only 1.3% more than 1999.

2. The oil producing Countries only have a finite supply of oil available. And that oil is getting harder and more expensive to get at. If they pump all of it out of the ground at once then the price of a barrel will maybe drop for a little while...But then they will run out. When they run out they really have nothing else to bring in income. They were third world before oil was discovered and once it is gone they have nothing else. Like it or not, we are going to reach Hubberts peak. Some say 2010, some say ~2070. But it is really likely that it will be this century. So the oil producing Countries are rationing the output to ensure they do not destroy their economy. That just makes sense.

If you had 100 gold coins, and you KNEW that was the last income you were going to have the way things are now....Would you spend them all at the same time or ration them out?

This actually also serves us....We are like goldfish in how they will continue to feed till we kill ourselves. We are so short sighted that if oil supplies start to dry up....Well we are not able to survive with the current infrastructure's need for oil. So we need time to work on other ways to power our lives.

3. Adjusted for inflation, Gas is LESS expensive than in the 80's

We can control this somewhat as a unified group without murder/violence or public protest like some nutty people in this world think....We can put pressure back on the oil companies by using less and less oil.
On this you are 100% correct and it is what we MUST do. We have to stop having a single person rolling to the grocery store in an 9 MPG Explorer.

We need to look at hybrid technology. My next car will most likely be a hybrid. I am not an early adopter of technology, but hybrids seem to have a good portion of the problems worked out (Except what to do with all the toxic battery's when they are replaced).

We need to get solar/wind/nuclear power plants to charge our electric cars.

Dubai is in this conundrum as we type here. They've realized it though and are creating a resort country to fall back on when they do run out of oil.

The other countries should do the same.

What we really need is a world wide collective effort to develope alternative energy.

Unfortunately, those in power with the resources to do this type of development are too engrossed with the short term gains they are experiencing.

Stupidity can be cured. Ignorance is for life!

They will have a tough time recruiting customers for their resort if those pesky terrorists keep blowing up the customers!

Maybe saving the oil we have in the U.S. until they run out will ultimately keep us the most powerful nation on earth.

Umdpru, I am done jumping on your rants. Truce?

"What we really need is a world wide collective effort to develope alternative energy."

That is already happening, free market forces will be happy to replace oil, why do you think we developed nuke plants? Remember the cold fusion fraud in Utah? All eyes were on them to see if they had found the holy grail. No oil company would have been able to stop it, just too bad it didn't pan out.

"Unfortunately, those in power with the resources to do this type of development are too engrossed with the short term gains they are experiencing."

That is simply false anti-establishment bullsh, folks talk about Bush and Cheney getting rich from oil but there is no basis in fact. And realistically, it has more to do with legislation coming from the congress as far as allocating funds to certain technology development. Then there is the work at the Universities. I remember at ASU when I was there, a lot of work was being done to try to develop solar powered air conditioning. How much fuel would that save in Arizona? How about all the windmill farms being built despite the fact that they are more expensive to run per kW/Hr? Through development and testing, eventually they might be refined enough to catch up. Too bad they kill so many birds.

Well i leave for a few days and look at all i missed!

It would be to difficult to go backand comment on all the stupid comments but i think there are a few worthy of highlighting as anyone with more then a 9th grade education would see how completely absurd these comments are.
the whole point being here that if "someone" weren't jacking the prices of oil, I wouldn't be in this situation and neither would many more americans
The dang "Man" is always getting me down, you arnt by chance black are you?
think the record profits for the oil companies can summed up as economic terrorism. Yep thats my opinion and I'm stickin to it
once again the oil companies do not set prices, those are set on wall street by buyers and sellers
Economics don't come into play when you are DEPENDENT on something
probably my favorite dumbanus comment of the entire thread. Perhaps try looking up the word Economics before making dumb azz comments.
I'd like you to expand a bit on how exactly gold and platinum are essential for technology
google it moron

i have to say umdpru is either the least educated guy i have ever met for which i pity him. or the biggest moron which i still pity him..

Nope, but thanks for the racial comment. You just showed us all your dark side.

The man, in this case is the assclown wall street traders jacking the price up, as you have mentioned.

Do I need to go back and bold/huge the word ESSENTIAL?

It is not essential, it is nice to have because of its electrical properties and corrosion characteristics. It is by far not essential.

I wonder what we were using to plate electrical parts before gold and platinum? huh.

You go f@cking google it!

I don't know who you think you are but you certainly don't know me and I am not sitting here pretending to know you. I'd appreciate it if you refrained from stupid Bullsh!t like that!

Seeins how you are a gas station owner, I expect the type of big oil lobbying you are presenting here and nothing less. Carry on!

Without the lame bullsh!t

Typical malcontent degrading the situation to fighting words when his naive perspectives are not embraced by his audience. I guess umdeeproo would rather have Chavez, Castro or Stalin running the economy than wall street. Life is gonna really suck for this chump. Poetic justice.

Seriously man you just keep looking more and more retarded. Gold is used in nearly EVERY computer, cell phone and thousands of other electrical devices. So yes it is ESSENTIAL as we are using it in all of the products. I guess you can argue that you could use another metal but they dont so how is that an arguement for what we were talking about?

I guess you could argue that toilet paper isnt essential, however since 99% of the world uses it to whipe their butt id say its essential. The same with gold in electronics, if 99% of the products contain gold then id say its essential for that purpose.

Essential doenst necessarily mean there is no replacment, in this context it means that it is neccessary for the way we build electronic products because that is what we do...

heres a link incase you dont know how to search yourself. http://geology.com/minerals/gold/uses-of-gold.shtml

Now even better he calls me an a$$clown and then says he would appreciate if i didnt refer to him as uneducated!!

Sorry buddy but you have removed all doubt from anyones mind that reads this post about your level of intelligence...

Id shut up now before you start to doubt it yourself...

You don't know me. Stop pretending that you do.

I have no doubts about my education.

If something can be replaced by another product or material then it is obviously not essential.

Here, I'll provide you with the dictionary definition since you don't comprehend what "essential" means!
es·sen·tial /əˈsɛnʃəl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[uh-sen-shuhl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective
1. absolutely necessary; indispensable: Discipline is essential in an army.
2. pertaining to or constituting the essence of a thing.
3. noting or containing an essence of a plant, drug, etc.
4. being such by its very nature or in the highest sense; natural; spontaneous: essential happiness.

haha, so toilet paper isnt essential? Sure you could replace it with pinecones but id still say its essential.

Once again for the purpose of this discussion gold IS essential in the fact that it is used by nearly all of the products in question. It is not replaceable economically or performance wise or they would replace it with a lower priced product.

Im sure the manufactures of the computers and cell phones would appreciate a phone call from the brilliant umdpru telling them exactly what they can replace the gold in their products with??

Its just a wonder how with the superior intellect you are possessing in the relms of both economics and manufacturing processes that you are even worried about the price of fuel, surely your making millions with all that brain power you have at your disposal.

Since you have no doubts on your level of education, perhaps you could enlighten us? was that a GED, or did ya really buckle down and get the high school diploma?

And I'd like to clearly state that I said gold and platinum were not essential for technology. Anything can be replaced, it just depends on how much and what someone is willing to sacrifice.
