is there any advantages or disavantages using thumbs to move the gimble sticks vs index and thumb

I'm thumbs but popular opinion seems to be pinch is a bit more accurate. I doubt I'll ever get to the level that it will make a difference though.

Do yourself a RR search with keaywords "thumb pinch" and see a lot of the same debate. No sense in beating the dead dog.

My $0.02 worth. I see the precision of Lucas Riva in the sky, and he is all thumbs. I too have been flying thumbs with airplanes since 1989, and now heli's. It works for me, but not for everyone._Sam B_

I fly thumbs, I use Maddison thumb cups, I know the main argument is try to write with your thumb, but I am just to slow with the pinch method and very uncomfortable, I would need a TX holder with the hand rests.MD 800

Yug flies with his toes and he's got the pics to prove it. In the glass between his feet is some Marvel Mystery Oil. What he does with it is still a mystery.

It doesn't matter.

Duncan Osburn, peter niotis, etc are all thumbers...

thumbs are quicker but generally less precise than pinching which is slower but more precise.

I'm a proud thumber

It seems like any combo works. Take a look at Daniel Jetschin's shakey sticks (aka: crack moves) while flying at IRCHA 2007. And also see Lukas Riva's thumb flying. It's almost inhuman speed movement in both cases; it's all timing. Fun sounds.

Daniel Jetschin - Pinch

Lukas Riva - thumbs , and another from IRCHA '07.

Fums only requires half the number of joints to be manipulated so is potentially quicker. Accuracy is down to practice. Athritis is always a problem Pinch or thumbs has its pros and cons. ie, if your a thumber, then it is imperative that sticks are kept sharp so your thumbs don't fall off with loads of big stirring. Pinchers don't suffer this affliction but it also helps to have bigger hands to aid mobility. How on earth that little 6 year old whatshisname does it I don't know. suppose he's extra bendy what with his age 'nall.
Flying thumbs or pinching also poses a different fundemental mindset in the way one approaches the human interfece concept as each result in a very different and personal feeling in the way you 'hold' the model. Perhaps it's even down to sexual preferences, I dunno

Was thumber - now pincher
From 1969 until being successful at flying heli's in 1989, I was thumbs. For fixed wing it was great and fast. I forced myself to go pinch for the heli as I was pretty sure the stick could be moved more precise. I think I was right.

For a long time I stayed with thumbs for planks but slowly weaned myself away and for the last 15 or so years fly pinch exclusively.

Some times when I hand launch a planker, I can't get the transmitter and neck strap in position fast enough and thumb until all is comfortable.

So many heli's - too little time...
