Sat 27 Strongheart indoor flying
Another good day of indoor flying. Debuted the new MSR and SUKHOI hooked up to the Hitec TX with Spektrum module. Lots of MSR helis flying today and a bunch of Blade CX's too. Scotty had the P51 and flying disc going. The Leland boys came with the CX's, HK450 and a brand spanking new Blade SR. The SR was very nice and a great next step when coming off the MSR or CX helis.
Curtiss and Stan showed off the Vapor, 4Site and Curtiss's new indoor jet, the 3 Dundon brothers had their Park Zone collection of aircraft flying.

Afterwards it was off to a good lunch and some bloody marys.

Next outting is March 13.

Need blades, check the prices here?
Another place with great prices on really nice blades. Really like the night blades with watch batteries that can be inserted before flight.

Very good day at Strongheart and the Hut
Strongheart was really rocking yesterday with over 20 pilots, with planes, helis, everywhere. The Leland gang of new pilots all showed up with 4 brand new Blade SR helis and they are all going strong. There were at least six new pilots there with MSR's, Esky 400 class machines, lots of new planes, Vapors, Embers. Curtiss Hyman had his foam flying shovel flying well and Stan Hyman brought out the brand new flying (used) pizza box. It does fly but has some aerodynamic problems needing adjustment. Seven of us adjourned to a new eatery, North Country Kitchen and ordered up our delicious bloody mary cocktails and lunch. Afterward I grabbed one of the new Leland guys and we made a Bud Light stop and headed to Kalkaska to introduce Russ to the Heli Hut and big time flying. The Hut was busy with 7 of the boys flying while Lars was molesting a hugh pine tree with his Kubota dozer/backhoe as he cleared more space for a future runway and more heli flying room. The field is at least 50 percent larger than last year. After several hours of flying, lying, and a few crashes it was off to the C&D Hobbies parts store. The store has changed again with the removal of a wall and increased inventory. The place is really getting to be a well stocked hobby shop for rotorheads, plankers and dirt burners. With newbie Russ fully stoked it was back home. A good day all in all.

Thanks to Jim Eggert, one more day has been added to the indoor flying schedule up at Strongheart, March 27 10AM to about 1PM. So if it is rainy or windy, that will be the place to be. Darn, I might have to drink some more bloody mary cocktails with Oggie, it's a dirty job but I think I am up to it.

Kalkaska Field Looking Great
Rode my old Honda 900 to Trout Festival in Kalkaska and visited the Vintage Motorcycle Show. Really big turnout for the motorcycle show and the Trout Festival Carnival area was bulging to the max.
Left the festival and cruised by all the folks getting ready for the Trout Festival Parade on my way to CD Hobbies. The Hobby Shop is looking great and full of lots of kits and spares for planes, helis, cars and boats. Been open 1 year now, Chris & Deb are doing great. I rented an RC Slash car to drive the outside track while Pimp Daddy showed me how it's done. I suck at cars, pitol grip radios aren't for me. After cruising the Slash around for a full pack, I walked over to the Party Store and grabbed two tallboys for Chris and I to sit out in the sun and chat. Scooter showed up to buy some parts for his 450Pro and he grabbed a tallboy too. About 1:30 the parade kicked off with floats, flags, vehicles, police cars, marchers, fire trucks you name it. Chris couldn't take it any more so he stepped into the shop grabbed his spiffy new 450Pro with a sexy new Hughes 500 body on it and sent it high up in the sky towards the parade route and did some high in the sky 3D away from the people but just far enough for everyone at the end of the parade route to catch a glimpse. That rotorhead sure was spinning with a 40C lipo pack in it, way off the end of my tachometer. After the flight Schwabby and family showed up from the parade. Chris had family and store obligations, but the rest of us heli thugs headed over to the club house to do some damage.
Martin was already there just packing up having done a dozen flights on his T600 & T450 when we arrived. Scooter repaired his 450 with the newly acquired parts and flew and Lars banged around the sky with really bad lighting, gray clouds overcast. Anyway, the field is huge now and the newly contructed work benches, relocated fire pit, flight stations and improved potti position has made this into a great place to fly helis and renegade goofy planks. It has really changed in 4 years but more importantly has really changed in the last 5 weeks. Chris,Lars and the gang have really done a heli of a job.
So with that said, I will be enjoying the balance of Wings19's club membership this summer, thanks for that Nick. Now just need some rain for all the new grass seed to take hold and make it look like Green Acres.
Until then Kamps Airshow today at 1300 and take a look at the events folder and give the MMRCHA event a looky-loo on May 15/16, not too far, two dayer with night flying also. Still time to online register. Keep ears open for BARCS regular funfly in May at Thompsonville Airport. Ionia Heli Fly in early June, then TRAMPS regular two-day funfly at Empire end of June, same weekend as the MID AMERICA HELI EVENT in Detroit.

Saturyday's Word of the Day is "CONNECTIVITY"
Good news fellow helinuts. Saturday 5/22 the BARCS model club will be
having their spring fun-fly at the Thompsonville Airport, with airplanes, jets and helicopters from 10AM to 3PM. OK fine, but the clincher is that right around the end of the runway at Crystal MountainResort the Michigan BEER & BRAT festival gets started at 4PM and goes until 9PM. See Record Eagle for details. Oh, how convenient. Sounds like a match made in heaven or at least in a heli-hut.

BARCS RECAP
Nice day in Thompsonville. Lots of dark clouds when I arrived at 10AM
along with a big crowd of spectators. The BARCS sure know how to get the word out and advertize. Lots of jet pilots from downstate taking advantage of the nice paved runway. Senior Stedronsky was there with 4 helis to fly and display, I had a pair of Raptors and Steve Fink showed up with the house trailer and family with a Corona and Trex600.
The three of us kept the sky busy with helis while the planks roared up and down the paved runway. The skies cleared by noon and the temp started rising fast. The BARCS blew through 200 hotdogs by 1PM.
A nice day of flying. Afterward Senior and I along with his cousin and girlfriend decided to pass on the MICHIGAN BEER & BRAT FESTIVAL only a mile away and headed to the Laughing Horse Saloon for $1 PBR's and some onion rings. Home before 6PM and a light snooze.

Doing it again before you know it.

BARCS fly-in recap by their Prez
Our third spring fun fly, now entitled the “Spring Thing” was a fantastic success, with about 40 pilots attending, and about 400 spectators enjoying the show. I believe BARC is firmly established as a primary contender for recognition in Michigan when it comes to putting on Air Shows. It took a lot of work by a lot of people, and great support from the media. We had good exposure in the Traverse City Record Eagle and Grand Traverse Insider, complete with some compelling photos of last Augusts’ Air Show.
We believe two key elements are going for us.
First, we are making extra efforts in attracting and looking after guest pilots. A free lunch, personal invitations, many personal emails, phone calls and other forms of follow up, topped off with gentle and friendly handling when they arrive. We let them know that they are important, and they are. We have now sent out a personal thank you card and photo to all of them, asking them to come back to our August 28th Air Show.
One of the most prominent guests we have is Marshal Emmendorfer, from Chesaning. He and his team travel around Michigan, and other states. He is the one that owns the B25, Corsair, and several military jet models. Marshal stuck with us last August and waited out the rain, later putting all his toys in the air to the oohs and aahs of the public and the rest of us. Between his entries and the full support of the Rotor Rebels helicopter club we had a good show despite the first few hours of rain.
After the August show we had several discussions with Marshal. He agreed to be our traveling salesman, touting our field to other pilots he knows as he made appearances all around our area. To have a top personality like him, with his well know celebrity as a major player in AMA functions, is a powerful factor in attracting other guest pilots. We owe Marshal and his friend Steve Pully a big thank you for their help.
The other key element we have going for us is our field, and the support of the Thompsonville Airport Committee, chaired by BARC member Tim Windrim. Tim is a charter member of BARC and some years ago was made a lifetime member. Also on the committee is Tom Besey, our former landlord in Thompsonville. Tom has also agreed to rent us a small corner of his hanger, where we can safely store our “stuff”.
Marshal and others have raved about the Thompsonville Airport and the way we have set it up for model air shows to make it one of the top sites in Michigan, even in the country! The wide open space with trees well back, the long smooth blacktop runway, and the separation of fixed wing and helicopter aircraft, are exactly what major players need, especially to fly jets safely. Our site is the biggest draw we could wish for.
We did have participation from several other areas and clubs. TRAMPS had a dozen members registered (although several more arrived late and did not register), two from KAMPS in Kalkaska, two from CAMS in Cadillac, four (including Marshal) from Chesaning, one from BUFFS in Charlevoix, one from Mesick, and thirteen from BARC including Steve Stedronsky, Steve Fink and Mike Hainen who flew the only helicopters at the event. Finally, we had another special guest, Steve Gutschow from KRAM in Ada, near Grand Rapids.
Steve is an expert jet pilot and a friend of our new member Kim Couturier who qualified for a special exemption, allowing him to fly jets.
Steve came up to our field a week ahead of our fun fly, met with Fred Stafford, flew his jets for an hour or so and promised to come back to us for the Spring Thing. He was assisting Kim in getting qualified, and observed Kim’s qualifying flight during our show. Congratulations to Kim on his achievement and congratulations to BARC who now has a member in the exclusive jet-qualified pilots, one of only about 135 in Michigan.
As we gain experience in large model aircraft events, we find ways to make our capabilities even better. We expect to introduce these changes at our 13th Annual Air Show on August 28th and these will be discussed at future member meetings.
In summary, we had a great time, no problems, and we picked up 13 prospective members. Fred has talked to all of them, and several will be at our meeting this week to consider signing up as a BARC member. Putting on winning events is our best method of supplementing our membership. Some of them will need training, some already know how to fly and will likely solo with us very soon.

Good day in Ionia
Up early and on the road to Ionia/Saranac field. The Farm was beautiful and the folks there just as nice as could be with nice facility and good food. They tell us we are always welcome to stop by and visit or fly.
Anyway, the fog and mist was gone by the time I passed Cadillac and the clouds moved upstairs as it got warmer. Pulled in and the canopy row was growing by the minute. The GR guys, Lansing area guys, DTW guys, BC guys, Holland guys were all streaming in and setting up. We ended up with about 28-30 pilots for the day. The rain never showed with enough clouds to keep it comfortable yet still needing sun glasses for eye comfort. Some nice raffle prized decorated the registration table. All in all it was a nice day of fun flying with enough gossip and teasing to make it all fun. A few helis did bite the moist soft ground but all will live to see another day in the air.
This is a another nice event in just the right location to make it a comfortable day trip for about all of Michigan's heli pilots.
Between the Mt. Pleasant,Ionia, Cheasaning and the new Lansing/Cards event coming in July, central Michigan is getting to be a heli haven with other good events like Water Vliet, Michigan Whirlybirds, MidAmerica, and TC event ringing the center.

See you all in Detroit.
