Scale Tail Blades
Hi All....

...can anyone help me locate some large Scale Tail Blades, at least 180mm. Just had a major letdown after working towards a set of OF Tails I'd been sent pictures of...... only to find today that the pictures were not of the OF's but of a set of Vario Blades (damn good job I asked for absolute confimation before I purchased)....

...I've checked the Vario sites to identify the ones in the pictures, but, alas, cant see them so I must assume they were either a) prototypes b) obsolete c) not Vario at all (which wouldn't surprise me)

Any leads gratefully appreciated - these blades were just perfect - now I've got a scale tail with no blades to suit !

Vario makes some 156mm ones which are grey square tip. Perhaps those have been painted.

Hui

I am nearly 100% sure those in the picture are OF's as already said. I have a set here, but the TE near the root has been cut back.

Here are my OF's you can see the differnce. In my search I could only find 180mm by OF.

..thanks for the info folks...

East Coast Scale - I found the Vario items which are very similar but too short, but thanks for the reply & info - appreciate it.

A&P/Heliraptor.....I think your right - the picture is of the OF 180mm with the root cut-off....the "painted" picture was originally supplied to me as the OF tails, when I queried the tapered root, the shop told me that the picture was in fact of Vario Tails, not OF......now it looks as if they are actually Modified OF....

If they are OF with the root modified (99% certain now), I need to do the same to get the right blade style BUT....I've never cutdown a blade before. I trashed a set of Vario Tails last year and was interested to see a laminated foam core construction.....Assuming the OF's are the same construction, cutting a taper on the root will obviously expose the foam and weaken the blade

Does anybody have any experience of modifying blades in this way ? How's it acheieved to ensure the blade integrity is maintained ?
Any comments gratefully received

I checked my blades, their hollow. I don't think cutting the corner off would hurt the structure of the blade. If the cut opened a hole into the blade I would simply epoxy a small piece of wood and sand it smooth.Don't Panic

Hi Will

The OFs have a small vent hole in the tip to keep the air pressure equal else on hot days they would swell up.

Do as AP suggests, pretty easy fix.

Just balance them afterwards, but if you keep your materials similar in size and quantity you won't need much work to get them right.

Don't worry, the 53 is fine. It's waiting patiently for it's new engine to get here.
I checked the blades by pinching them. Lee's right, keep your work the same on both blades and it won't take much to balance them.
Don't Panic
