whats the "best" for my baby?
Whats the "best" motor for the trex 450? By best I mean most efficient and powerful. Is a Neu worth it? I have the align xl motor now and it seems real nice to me. 13t pinion gets things a little hot though...

Also, will I notice a difference between a jazz controller and a castle?

I have started to really like my 450 and want only the best for her

The new XL motor with a 13 tooth pinion is probably your best over all combo for the money.

the 13T is getting the packs too hot. is that because my packs are getting too old? I have all 15C packs (except for the 22C Align puffy pack)

The 430XL makes my 25C packs hot, around 120-130F. Get a Neu motor or JGF 500TH.

neu 1107H/1.5Y for the motor
jazz esc
flightpower 3s 2500mah 25c packs

from what i understand, that is unboggable. if you prefer, you can have the 2170 packs too, but they will not like the high amp draws etc as much as the 2500's will

this is all assuming money isn't a problem. on a more bargain level, use the same packs, castle 35 or 45, and a JGF 500th or medusa 28-40-3400

By best I mean most efficient and powerful.
Doesn't that depend on your flying style? You say things get abit hot. If you have lots of cash who cares! Buy more Lipos and be done with it. Replace as needed.
If you want MAX performance with the 13 T then land after 4 minutes and save your Lipos if you have limited cash. Limit your flight time.
You want the best of both worlds ,efficient and powerfull ,,not a good combo unless your flying style is dialed in to the setup.
Motors and LIPOs can make a difference of course but flying style can destroy or exploite any setup. One guy has burned up the same setup , and another loves it with better collective management or less expectations from the heli..
Too many want a massive powerplant to keep them out of trouble and finesse or collective management is becoming a bad word because it points blame to the pilot not the equipment.
I am not saying you are to blame as I don't know your situation fully..I will usually blame myself first before blaming equipement,
I am having a hell of a time earning backwards inverted figure 8's for example ,,that doesn't need alot of power but it sure is hard for me to learn. A big motor won't help me.
Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

I hate to sound like the "bad" guy but all ya need to do is a search for each. The results of both are well documented in the bowels of RR

I run both and am extremely pleased. The Medusa 3400 runs a smidge warm, but MR says it's by design. The jazz... man, the jazz is a jazz man!

You ain't no "Bad Guy"
If inerested I will dig though the Bowels of RR and find what you say is true since you won't tell me here about the Medusa. That's ok.
I will take your word for it that the Jazz is THE JAZZ,,,,fine,,,I'm sure you are happy with your setup what ever that is. Don't know your flying style or setup,,so your statement means next to nothing
I use the 450 for practice and my Nitros and Gasser are the proof of practice . My 450 is the least powerfull of my fleet but the most flown.. Thanks for your info

yes, I know that the search does work. but by golly, this forum has gotten so big that searches bring back so much info (probably because of repeat posts like mine...)

As far as my request, I am not looking for the most efficient and most powerful. Just the best overall motor. Sure my flying needs works but heck, I want to be all I can be!

As far as the Jazz is concerned, why is it so good?

Well based on what I have read here so far I will quote:

"The jazz... man, the jazz is a jazz man!"

Hope this helps

ok ok... It's a new day and I'm not as lazy as I was at 1am last night.

Jazz 40-6-18
Why is the jazz the best?

The Jazz supports up to 6 cell setups. That means when you tire of running it on your 3S T-Rex 450, you can move it to your 6S EP-8.

Unlike other ESCs it has a built-in BEC that works. There is no need to run an external BEC when you have a jazz (assuming you're okay with 5v). The BEC is also good up to 6S, whereas with just about every other ESC you have to go external after 3S.

The Jazz governor is hands free after initial programming, and once set manages your headspeed quite effectively.

The Jazz soft start feature is smooth as silk.

The ProgCard for the Jazz allows you to tweak all kinds of obscure settings that most (self included) could care less about

I think that about sums it up.

hate to be the odd ball but my buddy and me run jgf 500th and it out powered the medusa by far and more efficent. runs cool also. i could be more happy with a motor. i run 14t pinion for about 3000 headspeed.

OK here's my recommendation for the most kick ass setup!

1. 4s (you don't have to go high C on this because a 4S setup will not have the high amp draw of a 3s setup). I am running an Align 2100 16C 4s battery that is just about as heavy as a TPX 2200 and it flies awesome.

2. Motor: Neu 1107/2Y
- I have tried Medusa 28-32-3400, 28-32-2800, JGF 450TH on 4S and the Neu is the most powerful AND efficient.
- on 3S the Medusa 28-40-3400 is hard to beat, runs hot. Unfortunately I have not flown the Neu on 3S because it's so much fun on 4S

3. ESC of your choice. I've been a quark man but do fly with an external BEC.

BTW. A buddy of mine that flies even harder than I loves the Neu 1105 over the 1107 saying that it is about the same power wise and is lighter and slightly more efficient. I haven't tried it though.

With the Neu 1107 and 4S, my TRex 450 has the best power to weight ratio of all of my helis, including my 10s TRex 600 and my 90 sized Stratus!
