Website hosting and design Computer Guys help?
Hey computer guys, need your help. My wife wants to setup a web page for scrap booking stuff with her own domain and will also be adding a domain for engineering. She needs a good hosting company with a good web page builder. I was looking at godaddy, dthosting, easypage, etc... there are hundreds and they all claim the best software etc... Also when I search for companies I get nothing but top 10 hosting list of hosting companies that don't match one another (more advertising). Is there a go to company or just pick one and run with it. She nor I have the time or desire to start from scratch with Frontpage. If this grows in the future should I look for a Linux or Windows host or go with one that serves both?

I use these guys, lots of disk space and bandwidth and free domain registration as long as you host with them. They use Site Builder which looks fairly easy to use, but cant comment on that too much because I didnt use it. I would go with a Linux server for two reasons, scalability and because there are quite a few good open source CMS packages that you can install for site building and management. The most popular I hear people talking about lately is Joomla.

As far as comparing all you can really do is look at service guarantees and support. Most good hosts will have online demos for control panel and whatever site builder they use. My suggestion would be narrow it down to a few based on name recognition, price, and basic features then spend some time with the demos. And I can say from experience there is nothing worse than getting stuck with a crappy web host.

Thanks
Thanks for the info. Looks like a good site and more than enough for what we need. I likt the demo modes, that helps sort them out.

i use canaca.com for hosting and domains, they have great customer service and have been using them for afew years, they allow mulitple dowmains to one host account, and i have 4, you can either hav a redirect domain, so if you wanted 2 domains to link to the same page, or a direct domain to another folder on your host.... they dont have a site builder though, just learn html, php, css, and javascript like i did
my homepage is one of my domains..

I used to have a few different hosting accounts and domain regs, but I switched everything to Godaddy. On top of their prices, services and merchant accounts which I think are great, out of the blue they call me every month or so to see if I'm happy with them and if there's anything they can do.
In this day and age where all the helpdesk service is in India, it's nice to get someone you can understand on the phone anytime.

Alot of help
You guys are a ton of help, I have found already that most of the site builder demos have one thing in common, zero flexibility. If you want a button or link somewhere tough you are stuck with the template. I also tried a few demos where I had large pictures on an FTP site but it would not link to them it wanted me to upload the picture again and let it create the directory. I guess that is why they are called site builders. I have learned a lot from homepages on here and viewing the source. I think I am going with IX Web Hosting, 8 domains 2 free, 500GB, 3500GB Xfer, Linux and Windows not that I am even near those features yet. Way more than I need for 7 bucks a month. Commerce and SSL if her venture takes off. The wife doesn't know it but I think I will hog the second domain and the FTP space for a few heli related items. Well more to come, kinda overwhelming, I have a new appreciation for major websites like amazon and eBay...insane.
