e550/e620se - how you guys extend the flight time
hi all, may i know what are the important steps/setup to extend the flight time. from what i heard, the normal flight time for e550 is around 5-7mins. im totally new to rc so what do you guys do to increase flight time. i've even heard these helis flying up to 11mins. im wondering how they do it. decrease head speed? etc. help me guys.

hmm well, go Nitro, all you have to do is add more fuel.

Decrease head speed, use a more efficient motor, change pinions, decrease weight, use a higher-capacity/lighter battery, etc. etc.

A nitro heli that that does good 3D will also run around 8 minutes (Hyper 50, Titan). If you want to just hover lazily, then a lower powered engine could get up to 25-30 minutes (TT39).

Lighten the bird with CF gear, boom support, ect...
Lower HS help a lot, keep it to 1900-2000.
Good blades also help.
High voltage systems are more efficient.

I got 8 solid minutes of throwing around with a TrueRC 12S 5000mAh and 6.5 with a 4000mAh. Here's my setup:

NHP 620
TrueRC 12S 4000/5000mAh
CC 85HV
Z50A-800 on 9T
Custom made 120T main gear
E-multigov
CF boom, CF Boom support, CF landing gear, CF tail servo mont with CF rod.
Quk alu. tail case
Raptor e620 w/V-bar, Tango 45-06, Phoenix 85HV, TrueRC 12S1P 4000mAh

My E550 has the TT motor with 11T pinion and the Ace 75A esc. I'm using TP 5000 6S packs and headspeed is around 2160rpm, turned down from 2300rpm at 100% and using Maniac blades I'm getting 7 minute flights and using 3800-3900mAh. I'm not a hot dog 3D'er but do give the heli a good workout.Steve -Trex 700N, Trex 600N, Raptor 550E, 450SE, Mini Titan, Logo 5003D, Beam E4

Since you are totally new you don’t want a lot of headspeed. I assume that you have the stock motor and ESC with a 6s LiPo battery. Get the optional 9t pinion and set the ESC governor for about 1500 to 1600 headspeed. That will get you a helicopter that has maximum flight time and will be easy to fly so you can learn to hover and circuits.

When you are ready for aerobatics start gradually increase the headspeed to about 1700 with the 9t pinion. When you are ready for shorter flights and more power a 10t pinion will give you about 1900 headspeed and a 11t pinion about 2100 headspeed.

An 11T pinion gives 2300 headspeed, a 10T around 2050 to 2100, both at 100%.Steve -Trex 700N, Trex 600N, Raptor 550E, 450SE, Mini Titan, Logo 5003D, Beam E4

You can't use the stock 550 set-up with 10 a123's. The stock set up will only handle 7s a123 which is the same as it's 6s li-po rating.
