Building my first scale heli, it's a Hirobo .30 Lama
This is my first time in building and flyin a scale heli so I need as much help as I can find.
First off what electronics are recommended for this .30 size Lama.
Servos, gyro? I have servos from my DX7 laying around and was wondering if they would be sufficeient for this project? Will a 401/9254 work in this scale heli.
What kind of pitch will I need, throttle, cyclic pitch, etc?
Will also be using a DX7 radio system for this heli.

Thanks,
MolokaiBoy

Hi MolokaiBoy,

The Hirobo Lama was my first scale heli as well. It flies great with the Futaba GY401/9254 combo. You won't need superfast or high torque servos to fly it either. I have flown it with my DX7 as well as with my JR 9303 with Spektrum module. Both fly it great, but I like the feel of my 9303 better.

I have Hitec HS-5475HB's on cyclic and collective, AR7000 receiver, and 4.8 volt 1650mah Nimh flight pack. I converted mine to electric and am running a Hacker motor and speed controller.

Currently, I am running -5 to +12 degrees collective, and +/- 6 degrees cyclic pitch. 30% expo on cyclic.

Regards,
Rick

Building my first scale helo also, what paint to you use on the tailboom loop, engine and interior plastic since nitro will probally get on them? in the instructions it says nothing about lube on the tail rotor drive tube, anybody doing that? in my kit they put the wrong size bearings in the bag #1 for the mixing lever assembly (bearing p/n 2500056)5x8x2.5 is what the should be, i got 4x8x3 anyone else get that?

Helimec, I used Rustolium with a Duplicolor "Adheasion promotor" It is normally used for car bumpers and help the paint stick to the plastic.
As for lube, you should have a tube of plastic safe grease with your kit for the gear drives. For the shaft itself, I used a light machine oil. Stand the heli on it's nose and put a couple drops on the shaft and let it soak it's way in after a days flying. Crewdogg

I had a real hard time with the tail push rod. I made it a 2 piece wire so I could bend it how I needed. I reconnected with a TT connector.

Has anyone used that "krylon fusion" paint? does anyone have a three bladed tail rotor? what about different blades for the three bladed main rotor, maybe fiberglass or carbon?

I've used the krylon paint as I wasn't concerned with the quality as much as just needed hi visibilty for my beater canopies. Try using "Bulldog", from your local WalMart in the auto dept. helps pain stick better to plastics like crew said

Anyone changed out that tail rod connector like that used on planks to a ball?

I haven't but I've been thinking about it. I think it would give more positive control. Hirobo goes all out on some things but over looks some items that are pretty important in my opinion..

In the process of building mine, i'm putting ball ends on everything!, that tail was a challenge though, not much clearance at the back

I've had no problems with the stock tail connector. I am using a carbon fiber tube which is a straight shot to the tail rotor servo mounted inside the rear of the mainframe.

Adam G asked where the servos were mounted in my model. Here are some photos of that.

Rick

Does anybody that has converted to the MRB 3 bladded head use the longer main shaft that the kit comes with? the kit comes with two main shafts, one for lama/shuttle or hughes 300, does it make any difference in stability?
