If you plug the vent with fuel in the tank it can distort the flapper valves or keep the purge bulb from sealing. Won't happen with the tank empty.

Wrong bung! Right bung will not disintegrate.
You didn't read my post completely. I clearly stated I had the correct part (came with the gasser kit). It may have been from a bad batch of bungs, but it was the correct one.

If you are burning gasoline you can keep the fuel in the tank all year with the right bung. Just because it came with your gasser kit doesn't mean it is the right one. If you are burning some form of alcohol or maybe camper fuel it may not be the case.

It was the correct bung, period. It's possible some sort of additive did it or maybe high alcohol content. I've noticed the gas here in HI doesn't stink as compared to OR, where I vacationed last year. The gas there absolutely wreaks.

I don't burn camper fuel or add anything except oil to the gas.
